In line water softeners

Anyone have any recommendations for in-line water softeners? Have seen several on the market for about $80 or so and wonder if they are effective. Most seem to work the same way as a whole house unit - which I don't need. Weekly car washing is all it would be for so I'm not too concerned with the longevity of the media.
Thanks,

They sell them at home depot or lowes, along with a variety of filter types.

If you're on a well, you may need it. But - Don't you use MDC ?
If MDC, you really don;t need the softner.

Have 'city water' but it's not MDC. Wish it was but it's lowly Avon Water co.

Checked their sites, only found larger filters or undersink (ie: harder to connect to a hose) filters on their sites. I'll be at the Depot tomorrow so I'll look around.

Thanks! Their site has one that looks very close to this: Total Filter Kit
Just wish it had a valve to switch from filtered to non easily, but oh well.

Would rather support a vendor here even if it's a couple bucks more.
