Glass "images" won't go away!

So I took a group of friends camping in my Jeep Wrangler Unlimited and after my jeep got really muddy people started drawing words and images with their finger into the glass of my hardtop. I didn't think anything of it at the time.. but now, after 5 months or so.. the things they traced into the dirt on my window can still be seen when my Jeep is wet. I've tried glass cleaner, vinegar + water solution, Coca-Cola, glass wipes, etc. and nothing has worked to get the images out of the glass.

Does anyone know kind of cleaner/polish I need to finally get these things off? I went and bought some Meguire's Plast-x Polish I think it's called, after someone suggested it. It only suggests using it on soft convertible tops, would it be ok to use on my hardtop glass? or will it even work?

any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.. I'm tired of looking at this.

Can't speak from personal experience, but I think I remember this coming up before.
I think clay was one suggestion and I think a paint cleaner/polish was also suggested.
I didn't follow the thread so I don't know what if anything worked.
The old powder or bar Bon-Ami might be worth a try if it is even sold anymore. :dunno:

note to above post -- I'm guessing these are glass windows -- if they are plastic, do not try!!

I think Bon Ami might be known as Bar Keepers friend now. I use it on my windshield about once a year, and I think it is a pretty good cure for the built up road oil and such.

Bon Ami is still available, but not easy to find. The original in both bar and powder form is the only Bon Ami product I am familiar with. It took a little more work, but did a great job.

I don't know, but I don't think the companies are the same, but who knows who really owns them?
Bon Ami is in Kansas City, MO and Bar Keepers Friend has an Indianapolis, IN address.

Another thing I have read about as being a good natural cleaner is baking soda. Never used it, though.

Bon Ami® Cleaning Powder is the one recommended for windows if I'm not mistaken don't get the Bon Ami® Polishing Cleanser which has calcite(whatever that is)

Thanks everyone for the suggestions! Keep them coming! I used Meguire's Plast-x Polish this evening and some glass cleaner to get the residue off. I'll see if it worked here in the next day or two when it rains.

Take the gass off, have it replaced, send it along with bill to your friends...:D

just kiddin...I would think a chemical polish like Steve said may work.

but yet another option..... put a brick through 'em & call your insurance

:yikes::notme::eek::passout:

I'm only kidding -- please do let us know what method that worked for you :)

The Bon Ami is available from some True Value stores. Under $2 a can. (Get the "original 1886 formula" not the one in the shiny can-as mentioned by The Chee.)

I've had contact with Faultless (parent company of Bon Ami) a while back and they said this is the stuff that was listed by GM with an official part # in the AC Delco line for cleaning windshields. The reason they (Faultless) stopped listing windshields on the can was that some people were using it on the inside, on tint film, which was ruining the film (obviously).
If you use it, use lots of water and rinse it off the car-don't rub it off, as you may well scuff the paint a bit.

Coincidentally, both the Barkeepers Friend and Bon Ami work well on SS sinks and pots! :D

I'd try a chemical polish if you have one :)

Bingo IMO

Is this glass or hard plastic...I tend to think the later of the two...if someone was able to make an impression in the window, that indicates plastic and not glass...as Steve said a good chemical polish or paint cleaner would be the place I would start

i had this done on my old z71 and i went to Binswanger glass company and they gave me a poweder that i added water to and buffed the glass with it and the scratched nameds came out.

I had shadows on the glass of a minivan once from using window writing paint and ended up needing SSR2.5 to get them out;)

It's glass. I actually think the Meg. Plast-x worked.. but in case i see those things again when it rains.. where can I get some of this "chemical polish?" I went to AAP and they didn't have anything like that. I saw a clay bar kit though.

This must be one awesome forum.. you guys are quick responders and very helpful! Someone referred me to this site on jk-forum.com... a Jeep Wrangler forum. You guys rock! Thanks again.

Man, you need to ditch the crack pipe!
Haven't you ever read about Detail City?
This is the site that doesn't allow anyone to post about any products that aren't sold by the sponsors.
Bans any Zaino users.
The "Last "Red Blooded American Male" left because the moderators removed some pin-up pictures. (After several complaints that the pictures weren't appropriate for a detailing site)
We don't spend enough time talking about detailing and have too much chitty chat.

Now, if you agree with all that claptrap, you probably should join the "Last Red Blooded American Male" at whatever site he ended up at.

However if you want to base your opinions on your own personal experience, we would sure love to have you. :bigups

Seriously, you will fine lots of good people that will be more than willing to offer advice and will be interested in anything you can contribute.

One other thing.
In all the posts, we forgot to welcome you.

Welcome to DC!
