Craftsman's Shop Vac 5.0 HP....Loud??

Beemerboy

Just One More Coat
I brought this unit about a year ago...the paper filter got wet one afternoon....was sucking up some water when I realized that I had not taken it out:eek:

So I used it without the filter for about 2 months....kept forgetting to get a replacement...it seemed to be louder without the filter...then when I replaced the filter it seemed louder than I recall it when I first got it

anyone have a take on this?

I was in the same boat with you. Filter got wet, lost some suction, took it out ,I was too lazy to go buy another, got louder, got hotter, etc....

I actually took mine completely apart and cleaned it all. You'd be amazed at what is sucked into the motor and wrapped around stuff. Give it a try.

After I did that to mine, it was like a new vac, and quiet too...

Thanks alot I was thinking that it was just me...but I can recall when it was new being quite...was the first impression that I had about it...going to see about cleaning it out this afternoon...I'm also going to get a foam filter for it...so that I don't have to keep changing it out

I went to empty my little red Craftsman out (I call it R2) and was surprised to see the filter had fallen off. The only thing doing any filtration was the foam filter liner. I probably should see what has gotten up in there one of these days. My little packing assistant tends to shed. :)

Same thing happend to mine. My problem started after I cleaned up a van that was covered in cat hair without a filter in place. I'm now looking to buy a new vac.

Just did mine was there a lot of stuff under that cap...cough cough...then put back together...seemed some what better hard to tell but I blew a boat load of dust and particles out of that area

Actually, it's wise to replace your wet/dry vac filter frequently (depending on use) to maximize horsepower and motor life.

It's best to buy those filters two at a time and always have a spare handy. I usually keep 2 or 3 around just to be safe.

It's amazing after using a vac in the garage and car for a couple months how much crud and debris you can really pick up in there.

I always take my filter out when I've got water to suck up, and I often forget to replace it too so TONS of crap gets sucked in there. I do the same, just take the thing apart and blow it all out with my air compressor and it's like brand new again :yay

I put a couple of posts on here a while back. I ended up giving my Craftsman vacuum away because of the noise level. I've been happy with the Ridgid I replaced it with.

I can't afford that right now its to bad that you can't plug one of these in at the store to see what they sound like before buying....this one wasn't cheap

What about one of these

00916993000

Craftsman 16993 2-1/2 in. Muffler/Diffuser at Sears.com

Lol i was at sears a couple of days ago and saw one. The inside looks like a pyramid pointing towards the vac and then the foam like muffles the noise. Seems like it disrupts the flow of the noise and scrambles it so its just a little quieter clams it will quiet it up to 25%

got it would be good buy me

13 bucks is a bit on the expensive side buy you can keep using it if something happens to the vac so it will eventually not be that bad. Just make sure your vac has the tug a long hose (locks in place) and also has it on the blow port. I saw one at home depot but cant find it online.

Yeah, I understand, I'm sorry I wasn't suggesting that you should go buy a new one. I just got to the point that I couldn't listen to the shrill sound any longer. I don't know if it was the volume, pitch or a combination of both. I found it to be unbearable when inside the shop. You shouldn't have to wear ear plugs to run a vacuum. I put up with it for quite a while but in the end it had to go. Life is to short to live with some things, single ply toilet paper, noisy vacuums etc. By the way I also have a Metro Vac and find it to be a little on the noisy side too but not like the Craftsman.

I did quite a bit of research before buying a new one and I did go into stores and make them turn the demo model on before I laid my money down. In Sears case I made them roll it over into the electronics department but found the new models hadn't improved much. I looked at all of the popular brands including some of the more expensive units like Fein. My father and my mother both have Craftsman brand shop vacs and they sound pretty much as mine did. I won't work around my father when he's running the vacuum. I'm not sure why it doesn't bother him to the same extent it does me. Craftsman does a lot of things very well, some things only marginally well but my experience with their vacuums was not good they were just plain losers. My new one came with one of the mufflers pictured above but truthfully it doesn't need it and improves the sound level only slightly.
