How to restore trim after NuFinish bleaching.

Hi, everyone.
New enthusiast here .

I have a ‘19 rav4 and I used NuFinish car polish and it bleached my plastic trims.
I have some streaks after using rain-x and/or googone spray from removing bird poop.
What is the way to restore the trim?
I have the black stuff and cerakote in my Arsenal.
Which products should I use ?

Thank you in advance

Solutions Finish is one of the best to restore trim to like new but it isn’t good for longevity. So I’d recommend buying Solutions Finish to restore the trim and then something like CarPro DLux for long term protection.

You`ve got to clean out the NuFinish residue from the trim, it hasn`t been "bleached", it`s got abrasive residue stuck in the texture. You need to use an APC (all purpose cleaner) or something like Mother`s Back-To-Black Heavy Duty Trim Cleaner, with a brush. Use a soft brush and don`t brush any adjacent paint, tape it off if you have to.

I used to dream about powder coated wheels on my motorcycle.
then I washed them and my dream came thru. Haha

I was washing the trims with many products but I’ll try this approach.

thx

Welcome to Autopia!

Can you expatiate a bit on the streaks from the Rain-X? It *is* on your glass, and not the paint, right? Did you try the "like removes like" approach (i.e., going back over the problem area with another try with the Rain-X, being careful to do it right)?

I dunno why you`d use the Goo-Gone for birdbombs, but more info on what happened with that would be helpful. Note that if you`re *not* using a LSP (Last Step Product, i.e., wax/sealant/coating) that resists such stuff then you need to clean it off with something that`ll neutralize the acids, otherwise you can get etching even though it appeared that you did indeed "clean it all off"; the [nasty stuff] from the guano gets into the pores/microfissures of the paint and continues to do damage until it`s neutralized.

EDIT/addition: On the NuFinish stains, note that such issues can be a real PIA to resolve, so don`t give up too soon! There are products made specifically for "removing white stains from trim". IME they do sometimes work a lot better than the usual APCs/etc. and might be worth a try. IIRC, the last one I bought was called something like "GR8".

Everybody seems to like the Solutions Finish, so IMO that`s definitely worth a shot, just remember to expect not-so-immediate results ;)

I’m a noob so I used what Scotty Kilmer on youtube recommended. He is a great mechanic but for car detailing products this forum seems to be the place.

Scotty is indeed the king of clickbait but I enjoy his videos too. I`d recommend this place for detailing advice though.

LOL, Accumulator, you go and use a word I not only don`t know the meaning of, I`ve never even heard of it! But I won`t go on in any length or detail, ;)
Sorry, didn`t mean to be inscrutible :o But OTOH, I guess it`s another way you can learn something new here everyday..even if it`s something you couldn`t care less about ;)

EDIT: Hey, hold on...you *must* have seen that one from me before. You and I have been discussing so many things over so many years...

Ah, OK...heh heh, yeah...gotta watch that "advice from the Internet"...even with regard to this place!

Hope you get that Staining sorted out, it can be a real PIA sometimes. I`ve even replaced trim when somebody used stuff I got tired of struggling with.

I used Back to black heavy duty trim cleaner and my trims looked like new for weeks. I attached the brush to small sawzall for faster brushing. I used 3 bottles . Rav4 has a lot of plastic trims.
And I was rear ended and have to replace back bumper cover .

WOW! Another "outside-the-box" application of a tool for detailing. I would like to know HOW you attach a brush to a sawzall and what particular sawzall model you are using to do this. Not sure, though, that some detailing tool manufacturer might see this "idea" as a viable and marketable tool for development, but I gotta give you kudos for doing it! The back-and-forth reciprocating motion of the sawzall is a great application for this type of brushing.

I am surprised that someone hasn`t thought of using an old electric tooth brush with a stiff bristle brush attachment to do this type of brushing as well.

WHICH brings me to the question of:
For those of you Autopians who have the Rupe`s I-brid mini polisher, do any of you use the brush attachments for cleaning exterior trim like this or for ANY detailing cleaning tasks requiring brushes (carpets, seat fabric, interior plastic trim)??
(My apologies to the original Poster (OP), Eldario, of this thread for hi-jacking this discussion and deflecting it to a different, but related, subject.)

Here`s an attached link to a thread I started on this very question of restoring faded black trim:

I used small Bosch 12V sawzall and taped the brush to the blade. Really efficient.
for bathtub I use impact drill with a brush attachment. I try to find electric tool to cut down on every elbow grease.
