Compounding dust

how do you guys deal with it??? primarily working out of my 2 car garage, sometimes ill work with the garage door down to get the room as dark as possible. by the time im done with a car... the whole garage + the car is covered in dust.

ive tried fluffing my pads off into a damp 5 gallon bucket but still, the dust is uncontrollable. pretty soon ill be putting A/C in my garage and keeping the garage door down 80% of the time. i need a solution to keep dust to a minimum.

what are some tips or things you do to control the dust?

Edit - forgot to include what products im using. Griots FCC or Jescar compound. lake country MF cut pads most of the time

Dust on the vehicle surface?

everywhere! i normally dust the vehicle surface off before working on it. ive seen a few guys use blowers to blow off the area but to me... that just moves the dust around and creates more havoc

after im done with a vehicle. i blow out my garage floor and dust my cabinet areas.

it gets pretty nasty, i try to wear a respirator the whole time

If you can trust an AIO, I recommend HD SPEED unless cutting is needed for heavy correction. Perhaps research Sonax

I`ve had that issue but not to that extent. Dust on the vehicle around the area I`m working on but not all over the garage.

Pro Polish 2 and SSR3 have minimal dusting without dampening the pad .. also take a look at your pads that they aren`t part of the problem

How do you clean your pads? I was having this problem in the garage I work out of too and thought it was because my parents don`t keep it up well enough - turns out my pads were never fully flushed out from previous paint corrections. I use FCC too and there is zero dust, ever.

soaked in snappy clean. rinsed out using garden hose on jet mode. spin dry on a DA and left to air dry for the rest of the time.

might have to go back and look at my pad cleaning process....

Snappy clean never gets all the polish out. If you have a pressure washer try out Swanicyouth`s process below and continue to use snappy clean. Otherwise soak in snappy clean rinse out and do a second treatment with more snappy clean or a different pad cleaner spray.

Had literally the exact same technique. Switched to spraying the face with APC/Dedicated Pad Cleaner(picked up a couple bottles of PB Tornado and it really works well), agitating, then I put it face up on a grit guard in a bucket and pressure wash it. I`ve turned the water deep chalky white rinsing out just one or two pads that I thought were "clean". It`s the same technique that mnehls linked to, but he has a nice little setup where it drains. I have to empty the bucket every couple pads. Swanic knows his stuff when it comes to uncomplicating things.

If this shortens my pad life, I haven`t seen it happen yet. Never had a pad delaminate or anything, and even if it did shorten the life of the adhesive or something it`s worth it just to never have dust issues anymore.

I`ve been using McKee`s polishing pad cleaner. I use G21+Boss MF pads and FCC and I never have any dust from that product. My process for cleaning is spray all the pads, let them sit for a minute or so, work the product into the pad. Then rinse with cold water. That being the most important step. I used to use warm or hot water. I definitely see a difference in them looking and feeling new for an extended amount of time

I don`t get heavy dusting with Menz 400. It`s a little worse with Rupes blue and Meg`s d300, but nothing I find too objectionable. I would think the Jescar and Menz would be similar, but I`m just guessing. Maybe you are just working the compound too long? Maybe try a spritz of IPA solution before wiping the compound off to cut down on the dust?

hmm maybe using too much and working too long? ill have to change my technique up.

i always thought some dusting was normal due to all these guys on instagram blowing out their pads and creating a large dust cloud. then i thought to myself, how the heck are they keeping their shop so dust free.

I try to only use compounds/polishes that generate very little dust and I`ve been blowing my pads out the side door now as well since that is what generates dust for me. Unfortunately, doing so definitely add a little to the overall time of the job but I have little to no dust at the end. I have my garage door down at all times too so that helps. Eventually I want to make a filter/fan box set up for blowing my pads into but for now out the door it is.

Bingo! Well, at least IMO. I never work such products until they`re dry so there`s minimal dust to deal with.

EXCEPT FOR...

Yeah, I do get some dust in the shop when I do that, pretty much unavoidable although I try to minimize it by blowing them out towards a damp floor. If I had a zillion pads I could probably eliminate the dusting entirely by changing pads instead of cleaning them.

EDIT: come to think of it, even with the blowing out I don`t get enough dust that I need to cover the other vehicles or anything like that. And I used *a lot* of product when I was KBMing with M105.

I get more dusting when I use microfiber pads than any foam pad

I really like Tornado for pad cleaning, its phenomenal

maybe a spritz of pad conditioner? did that help any?
I have dusting issues as well but doesn`t seem as bad as what you are getting.
