Kaepernick

The reason for the thread was a sanity check for me. Sometimes I just want to know what others with similar interests think/feel about different subjects. With Kaepernick, my feelings are that he has the right to express himself, but this protest was not the correct way to go about changing people`s views on the treatment of Black people in America. In my opinion, he really accomplished nothing except hurting himself and casting a bad light upon Pro football. Football is a team sport and you can`t have one individual causing a division in the locker room. The 49ers were in a no win situation, if they suspended him it would look like they were anti-black and anti-free speech and would have opened themselves up for lawsuits. I was a crappy thing to do to your employers and the fans that are paying your salary. Now it`s old news and did not change anything.
 
Well, then maybe there`s an upside to this whole thing after all! Not that I`d give any credence to something from Breitbart..
 
What I find interesting is that Kaepernick, a rather mediocre quarterback who still earns tens of millions of simoleons per year in a sports league that`s almost 70% comprised of black players (which also happens to be America`s best paying and most popular), can say he actually identifies with blacks living in poverty let alone fight for racial justice in America by sitting silent at a football game. This is a guy who`s living proof that black Americans can make it to, quite literally, the big leagues. Because of that I find it odd he`d choose the national anthem as his target, as if American culture itself is to blame for something, when in fact it`s precisely why he`s richer than 99.9% of other American citizens.

This whole thing is just so asinine that I`m left wondering if he did this to save his own football career. It`s a lot harder to get fired after you pull a stunt like this than it would have been otherwise. In which case, he`d be using under-privileged minorities as a sort of human shield.
 
I had seen a meme on this but posed the question if people sitting at home watching the game with a beer in their hand should stand as well.

The man exercised his right of free speech for whatever his personal reasons but the discussion is about his character and not the issue. This is actually how politics is discussed today.

D-bag...throw him in the brig. Everybody wants their 15 minutes of fame...as long as it doesn`t require too much effort. What does Kaeperdick do the other 6 days he`s not sitting on the bench on Sundays? Is he out in the community trying to actually make a difference or does he just write a check every now and again to prove he`s `invested in the struggle`?

I don`t really have that big of an issue with him not standing. It is free speech and all. I take issue with his divisive rhetoric, though. And it`s not just him, but I`m tired of the divisive rhetoric in general. To me, divisive rhetoric and the "us and them" mentality within our own nation is the #1 threat to this country right now.

I agree, though IMO the (despicable) devisive rhetoric is Free Speach too...sigh...one of those "cost of freedom" things.

I can`t help but wonder whether all this [seemingly unpatriotic behavior] is *REALLY* intended to right-the-wrongs or is motivated by something else.

I absolutely agree with you on that last sentence. Theres no question of motives not really being very honest here.
 
I consider these people traitors especially the over paid athletes and other celeberties. I say get rid of them all ,put them in Norh Korea, Syria, Somolia etc and see how they change. In my opionion they are just as evil as terrorist.

If those [individuals] are doing what they`re doing to get a rise out of [a target demographic] they`re certainly succeeding. What if we just *ignored* them..."one more idiot who`s wrong about something; nothing to see here."

Everybody`s entitled to their opinion, but I don`t see how some [individual] engaging in peaceful (if despicable) Civil Disobedience is "just as evil as terrorist" who perpetrate violence against anybody they disagree with, nor why they deserve to be stripped of their Constitutional Rights for protesting a perceived injustice in a peaceful (if offensive) manner.

Some people are awfully willing to deprive their fellow US citizens of their Consitutional Rights for inconsequential behavior such as "lack of respect for our institutions and symbols".

Your not getting what I`m saying, yes it is a citizens right to object to the anthem but these same people are showing disrespect for the soldiers who fought and gave us the ability to do just that. If soldiers had nothing to do with it and the anthem was just something politicians came up with then ok but when soldiers die for this country and people do not show support then shame on them. Not supporting and protesting the anthem does nothing to change local law enforcement actions either right or wrong. But it does say thanks for nothing for the sacrifices soldiers have made.
