Most regreted detailing product purchase?

Why are there so much hate on BF Crystal Coat? I read stuffs about it and thought that it`s just a bad batch. Is it mostly the chemical composition issue or just it being so hard to be used?

Thanks!
I haven`t wanted to spoil the party and have been holding back on saying anything. After all, if this many people have had issues with it I must truly be the exception. I`ve used it on 3 occasions and had no problems with either the application or after it had cured. I have no idea as to the durability as I can`t ever let anything sit long enough to figure how long they`ll protect. I`m a big fan of Crystal Seal and find myself using it as an LSP more than any other product. I like the way it looks better than the coating.

Griots car wash which just felt like I was washing with water, Blackfire rinseless because it streaks like crazy for me, Rupes micro fiber pads (the only ones I have experience with from them) because they didn`t seem any better on the machine than a meguiars pad and both fell apart before I could finish the second car I did with them, and lastly any trim restoring products that aren`t Dlux because none lasted through a rain but some were so difficult to clean off of the paint after a rain that I can`t believe they basically rinse off of the trim.

If it was a bad batch Autopia would have refunded your purchase price. As far as I know that never happened. I stayed away from it.

Interesting, any tips on how to use it GearHead? I read Mike@DedicatedPerfection review on it and he didn`t have any issue as well, but I don`t recall reading any tips on how to use it properly either. Since I`m more of a WGDGPS fans, I`ll be waiting for their spray sealant sale instead :) I heard A LOT of good things from the Crystal Seal though. I should have give it a try when they were on sale not too long ago. Mind to describe why you like it better than the coating in terms of look? Is the BF Crystal Seal deepen the color or is it more of a glossy/glassy look? I myself tend to like glossy/glassy look more :)

I kinda remember reading a thread where several members were discussing that BF Coating that starts with this number for it`s serial number or production number might be bad. I got it for free though, might give it a try one day, however since the shelf life isn`t gonna be that long based on what I`ve read, I need to find the right time to use it altogether!

It was the first coating I tried. I don`t know that I have any special recommendations. Use the BF Coating Prep, I went over mine a couple of times just to be sure it was free of polish and decontamination products.

I had a friend recommend that I have plenty of Lake Country applicators on hand, I probably used 4 on a vehicle and maybe even 6 on a truck. This is the only place that I can see things going wrong quickly. You can tell when an applicator starts to "load up", the coating doesn`t flash as quickly, you can see the difference in the little rainbow the product leaves while flashing off. This has always been one of my short comings, I tend to use plenty of product so changing applicators was is probably a good thing for me. If you think you`ve got enough product here it`s probably too much.

I had another friend recommend using the CarPro Suede towels to buff and I used these. I was a little nervous when I started and applied to pretty small areas until I was more comfortable with the process (1/4 of the hood). I remember thinking, I can`t hurt anything if I don`t put anything on. ;) Beyond that maybe I was just lucky. I`m sure that having a garage with a consistant temperature helps as well.

As far as looks go between the two products I`ll say this. I`m not good at describing the look of a finished product, glossy, glassy, sterile, glow, warm, plastic like, optical clarity and the list of descriptors goes on but unless you`re looking at 2 products side by side then it`s a sliding scale, 2 quality carnaubas can look quite different. I know what I like but more importantly for me I know what I don`t like. The BlackFire products (sealants, coating) that I`ve used tend to darken the finish a bit. I`ve ended up with a bunch of white and pearl white vehicles I work on regularly. It`s easy to make a comparison on a light vehicle. Crystal Seal is pretty minor in the darkening department when compared to Montan Wax but they do seem to make things darker. The Crystal Seal just seems to be "honest" in it`s appearance and is stupid simple to use and maintain. It takes all of 30 minutes to apply, I like this product. My son helped me perform a thorough detail on his white Escape a week or so ago. He doesn`t do this often but after putting the Crystal Seal on he said, "that`s nothing like the waxing we used to do". He`s right, couldn`t be easier. From your description of what you like, I suspect you would like the look of the coating.

I have 2. Ironically, both are well-liked products but have such relatively short lifespans.

I have purchased 2 different Flex 3401 machines and both stopped working.

The other is a Aztec Hot Rod hot water extrator. Worked amazing for 20 or so hours then the heater stopped.

There it is, about $1350 or so in equipment that I feel like have not earned their higher price tags. Love them while they work though.

Sounds like you have the same issue with Flex that my wife & I have with Sony products. Work great for everyone else, just not us.

I`m going to put solution finish on here. I used it on my wife`s Lexus running boards black tread. They looked new for 2 weeks but the grayish white is coming back now. Thought it would hold up longer than that. I will give it one more shot at redemption but topped with Dlux this time.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts here!! I`ve never thought of having to use more than one LC applicator before. I`ve always thought that one is enough. Good to know then!! I`m trying to move to McKee coating, since they`re cheap and durable when compared to WGDGPS. I can offer their coating at a slightly premium price for people that wants more durability than what a sealant can offer.

Interesting tips there, using suede clothes to buff! I`d go find one and give it a try on other surfaces first I guess. A flat glass stoves can easily benefits from coatings I suppose B)

How often do you apply the crystal coat? Do you think that it can go at least 3 months for a car that is normally washed twice a month or once a week without any booster or drying aid? Since only enthusiasts that do that and we know that not all of our customers are enthusiasts, most of my customers are people that want to clean their car annually or once a while. Yes, I`m digging the look of a coating. I like how glossy WGDGPS as well on light-colored cars!

As I mentioned, I`ve never really tried to see how long any LSP will actually go on the small circle of vehicles I maintain. When I do a complete wash, I put somelthing on it. Old habbits die hard. I`d bet the BF Coating would go 6 months anyway, probably longer. Heck, we got 3 months of reasonable protection, wand washed every week or so from CarPro`s HydroFoam through the snowy early winter months on my daughter`s car last year. We don`t have hard water around here and spotting is never a big concern for me. I had a local business turn the sprinklers on my car a few weeks ago as it sat in the hot sun. I really thought I`d have an issue by the time I got home. These wiped right off my sealed car with a little Poorboy`s Spray & Wash.

I`ve never actually reapplied BF`s Coating (this isn`t because I have any issues with it, it works just as I hoped it might). In each case I`ve always taken the easy way out a couple of months later and used either a wax or a sealant and in most cases Crystal Seal, not because the vehicle needed a darn thing. Most of the the detailing I do is because I need to do it. ;) I`ve got a bottle of PBL Coating that I`ve been going to give a shot. It`s supposed to be very easy to use. I was going to use this on my son`s car a week ago after about 20 hours of prep, when it came time to finish up I grabbed the sealant, go figure.

The black pole sold with some Montana Board Hair brushes. Cheap garbage that snaps easily costs 15 dollars just for the pole. Saw a 2.99 pole in Wal-Mart`s cleaning section. At least twice as strong, probably more.

Only Meguiars ultimate black trim restorant. Bleck!!! That greasy stuff never worked on the trim and some parts that it didn`t smear up only worked for a week. All season dressing, on the other hand, is phenomenal.

My luck was not good with PA`s Master final polish, only one pass and it was dry !
I tried less, tried more, priming. Just flash, dry. hard to wipe off as well.
I will try again because of the cost.
Now the big one..Meg`s 105, WOW!!
Should have a disclaimer " Not for Nubies " I tried this as my first ever compound, Man what a mess !
I had it everywhere, shoes, pants, t-shirt, arms, glasses, hair and face, I even found out what it tastes like.
White specks splattered on all trim and glass.
M205 is total opposite, that was fun.

Back when I detailed boats....I bought some ShamWow`s from the infomercial. Big mistake.
Years ago, my father bought me a 3 pack of ShamWow`s (I think they came in individual tubes). As I remember he was highly offended when I told him no thanks and that I thought he`d get more use around his home with these than I would. ;)

Whoa that`s a surprise! Try shaking the bottle of Master Final Polish very well next time? That`s the only thing I can think of.....unless the panel was hot or in direct sunlight....

The one I did not make. There was a few sales I missed but thought there was a better one coming (this was during the endless BF sales).

I was polishing cool glass in a garage, then switched machines and to Rupes & PB`s which were much better
The one thing comes to mind often is my machines fan seems like its almost blow drying some products. Torq10
I will be upgrading machines 1st week in Aug.
Thanks, and I will shake that bottle of PA, and try again.

3D Trim Care - Last only a week
3D Eraser
HD Polish (non +) - way too much dust for my liking
Meguiar`s Mirror Bright Wheel Cleaner - Not enough clinging to the wheel
Meguiar`s Mirror Bright Shampoo - Nothing special about it. Found it to be to thin in consistency for my liking and the suds were rather weak
303 Quick Wax (blue bottle) - I got this from a Autogeek giveaway so technically I didn`t purchase it. Left the paint sticky and had no sheeting or beading to it.

A couple non PBMG products

Adams Tire Shine - Nothing special here. Meguiar`s All Season Dressing performed much better.
Adams Waterless Wash - The old version was almost just like water with no lubricity lol.

Something that sort of fits in this conversation:

Meguiar`s #7.

I got it back when I first started detailing(my first "professional product")and use it as a filling glaze on darker vehicles sometimes. I hate the smell, it is a tough to remove even when applied by machine, and it stained a couple polishing pads which took forever to get the color out.

Unfortunately, it does its job of filling and enhancing gloss REALLY WELL(this is why I said above that it SORTA fits into this conversation), so I can`t justify replacing it until I run out.

In hindsight I wish I would`ve just gotten PB Blackhole, or CG Blacklight(CG brought me into the addiction and that`s what I knew back then).

I don`t use glazes on my car, but for some customers who`s cars are dark with bad paint I will begrudgingly put on a coat lol
