Whiteout

PA DETAILER

DETAILED TODAY?
Went to leave for work yesterday afternoon. Cold and windy and they were calling for snow. Looked out and all seemed ok. Left about 5min early to warm up the xterra. Started my trip on to the 219 hi way. OMG Total whiteout The wind and snow was something i have not seen in YEARS! About 1/4 mile into it i was going to turn around and call it a day. But went on anyway. 25 miles of pure #ELL. 25-30 MPH with flashers on the whole trip. Stayed in a line of vehicles. You could not see 20 feet in front of you. Made it 5 min. late and totally exhausted from the trip. Fun day. Trip home was much better. But only 8 degrees out. I must be getting old. 2-3 people wearing SHORTS!! I thought even if you live close, if you break down, and have to deal with it, you will DIE in 1/2 hour or less.

Last night we only got a little bit of snow - but it was a total freeze out. The roads were ice. I was driving home from work and there were accidents everywhere and cars that simply spun off the road or couldn't get up a hill.

It was pretty extreme. So, there were backups all over. I ended up going through what's like a mountain type area in the woods to get home from work. It was even worse here - 100% ice on the roads.

However, the Pathfinder in 4WD w/ the center differential locked just has no problem over this stuff. These roads were so bad here, they were deserted.

I also saw a 4x4 new F150 stuck in a ditch on a 45 degree angle. I always see these Mr "I got a 4x4" dudes driving way too fast and aggressively for conditions when it snows.

I always see these Mr "I got a 4x4" dudes driving way too fast and aggressively for conditions when it snows. Yea, saw that too yesterday. Thing is, if you did pass, you had no idea what was in front of you. Thats how bad it was. A chance i was not going to take. On a good note, the XTERRA never missed a beat.

Glad you guys are OK. People need to pull there heads out of there 4th point of contact and use the brains that the good Lord gave them. I see it as well. I let them go by and wave to them when they get stuck

Passing in the snow. Lolz. I love it. I'd love to know where these people have to be where they have to risk their lives and everyone else on the road to get there so fast.

If some dude hit me while "passing in the snow", I think it would be on. If it was a lady - I'd be 100% sure to get whiplash....

I experience whiteouts often in Montreal, Canada but nothing like the time I was in Rochester, MN. I was driving to St-Paul, MN (from Rochester, MN) and had total whiteout the whole way (about 80 miles) and couldn't see the road in front of the hood. To make things worse, I had never driven that road before and I had my wife and son (only 2 years old at the time). It was intense to say the least, total white knuckle driving.

Dust storms in AZ were really bad too but luckily they don't happen very often.

PA and Swanicyouth -

Glad you guys are ok and hope today is not like yesterday..

Think that too many people look at the staged commercials on TV and think - heck, my ______________ can do that too, just watch...
And we all have seen them in the ditch hopefully not upside down... :)

Once I was driving my new 2003 M5 Wagon home from SoCal through a winter white out starting at Weed, CA, through the 5 mountain passes in Oregon, with cable chains, and I was also amazed at the idiots flying past me that I would later see off the road..

Some people just dont get it..

Dave, you should have turned around and gone home, but if your superiors at work know what you did, that should be a big score for you.

Dang, my niece got caught in the same PA snow storm the other night - but w/o the luck you guys had - she slide off the road, into a pole, and totaled her car!

Thankfully she's fine, upset since it was her 1st car and had only own it less then 2 weeks :( TO add insult to injury today is her birthday. Poor thing! At least the cop is cutting her a break and only giving her a non-point citation.

Driving in slippery conditions is no joke.

We had the same system come through. I was home by then, but in 20 minutes the street and driveway were covered. That wasn't the bad part, overnight it got to about 12* so it was like a sheet of ice under it. But between the new Yokohama's and LSD in the Jetta it didn't skip a beat. I'm sure once it gets over the front bumper, I'm SOL.

And...[INSERT my usual admonition to get Winter Tires even if you have AWD/4WD]. Cheaper than an insurance deductible ;) and the way some such tires work on glare ice is simply amazing.

My old Goodyears would spin in drizzle, so I knew with moving back to PA I needed a good set. I'm not like the majority of the public and be like "they aren't worn completely yet!" I'd rather spend $500 in a good set of tires than $500 on a deductible on a totaled car... The Bridgestones on the Camry are worthless, so they're going to get replaced with the same set as the Jetta.

Now if my town would stop using so much rock salt. I swear they dumped 10-tons on my street alone, and it's a dead end! Tomorrow I'm going to have to get out the hose and rinse all the salt off the thing....

Yeah, the GY RSAs that came on the Crown Vic are incredibly bad when the roads are even a little damp. I'm just thinking of them as free tire wear while I redo the suspension but once I start driving the car for real they're history no matter how much tread they still have.

I have General Grabbers on my Pathfinder. I think they are rated to except studs. I got them just for snow.

hEY BRO, WHY NOT LIST YOUR LOCATION?

I'd LOVE TO KNOW WHERE IT SNOWED?
