RIP Red Rocket

I know this sounds crazy but what about a Volvo, either a S60 2.5T AWD or an S60 R AWD. I have had both an they are among the most reliable cars on earth and get good gas mpg. + They are built like tanks, my last one a 2.4 demolished a drunk driver, I was fine an the car still ran fine, his honda didn't survive...

+ Volvo is among the thickest clear coats of all oems :D

And don't let the radio be the decider. Get a $99 head unit from Crutchfield with a USB port in the front, and fill up a thumb drive with music!

I'm using CARS.COM to find a car. I'm going with a range of 75 miles from home and the only "option" I am using for a filter is "Manual Trans." I must admit, I have really been spoiled by the 6 disc in the Suzuki and was really hoping to get another one, but they are even rarer than a stick shift.

I'm hesitant over the USB connection for a flash drive, because right now that is above me, I don't understand how it would work in a car stereo setup. Thanks all for the advice.

I may not get the Subaru after all, I would be the 8th owner (the dealer who has it has owned it twice now - per the carfax) AND the guys at the LegacyGT Forum are advising against it, saying that at 140k, it's a high probability of major problems arising. I can buy a warranty for the car for the drive train, 5 year/100k, but now I'm doubtful after the veto by the Legacy guys.

Thanks again for the help, keep it coming!

If AWD is not a requirement, then I will make a crazy suggestion. 2008+ VW Jetta SE. Stick with the 5 cylinder 08+ models only. They have the upgraded timing gears/chain and 20 more hp. My Jetta is a 5 speed, 6 in dash CD player, and with the winter weather package, heated mirrors, washer nozzles, mirrors, and seats. This is the reason I say SE, since they are a little nicer inside with the leatherette seats and the LSD differential. I've owned my car since 2013 with 44K, right now it has almost 70K. I've done absolutely nothing to it besides oil changes, a battery, couple filters, and some better tires. The 5 cylinder may be a dinosaur to some, but it's reliable. (Yea I know VW and reliable in the same sentence...) They are moderately easy to work on, the only difficult thing I need to do is the thermostat. You can pick them up pretty cheap now adays, good bang for your buck.

Right now I'm looking at a 2007 Honda Civic Si, 4dr. It has 141K and they are asking $8,500

Don- I think you're smart to pass on that Subie, all those changes-of-ownership tell me it's a lemon. I know they're usually OK, but both of my Subarus were utter POS lemons that the dealerships couldn't fix to my satisfaction.

Don -

Here is a really nice Civic Si from some friends of mine, who have been reconditioning and selling used Honda and Acura's since the 80's..
They dont buy anything from Auctions, but prefer to find their cars from Owners, so there can be a paper trail..

I have purchased many of their vehicles over the last few decades, and all have been perfect.
Last one I bought was a 5-speed CRV that I got in and drove straight back to the Pacific Northwest, around 975 miles, and it ran perfectly all the way...

You can buy any of their cars and they are absolutely ready to go as far as you want to take them, and not fall apart...
They do all their reconditioning and know EVERYTHING there is to know about Honda and Acura cars...

I really like this one and if I didnt have to fix up my house so much now, I would seriously consider buying this and putting my Hemi Grand Cherokee in early retirement in the garage...

Check out this black beauty below ----- :)

Dude, I would love to do the "fly out, drive home" but my wife's condition makes it impossible for me to leave for that long. BTW Great Looking Cars!!

In fact, speaking of the wife, she called me at work yesterday and TOLD ME to go to 'such and such' dealership (an hour from work, 2 hours from home) and look at two cars she has picked out AND she REFUSED to tell me what they were!. Well, I had been talking bottom of the line new cars for affordability, gas mileage etc, DESPITE what my motor head mentality was telling me. So thinking I'm clever, I went to the dealer's site and looked up the least expensive cars on the lot that were manual trans ... that's the ONE thing I refused to go without. Well, I found 3 cars ... one 2015 and 2, 2016 .......... Sonics ..... *SIGH* Wait, there's a little hope, one of the Sonics is a sedan, not a butt-ugly hatchback (apologies the the HB fans). But wait, ... *SIGH* the sedan version is the 2015, still brand new but "technically" a year old. So now I'm back to looking at the two '16s hatchbacks. One is not only but-ugly, it's BLACK!!!! A detailer's nightmare ... even on a car he LIKES! The other one is bright, and I mean BRIGHT!!! yellow. A color that draws attention to itself, and I don't want to call ANYONE'S attention that it's ME in this car.

I get there and the salesman is in on it, won't tell me nothin' He just says "Wait here, I'll bring them around." He makes me wait an almost unacceptable time when around the corner, I see a car moving behind a row of cars in front of the sales office. The next thing I know, I'm tripping over my jaw, my eyes have popped out of their sockets and knocked my glasses away before splattering on the showroom window .... Here comes a 2014 Camaro, black with two wide, white stripes running over the hood, roof and trunk lid.

As I stand there drooling, he pulls up in a SECOND Camaro, this one pure black, no ornamentation, stripes, stickers, ANYTHING. If Darth Vader drove a Camaro as a teen, this one was it!

The cars were almost twins, not considering the year difference. The '14 had the racing stripes, but the '13 had a NICE deck lid spoiler on the trunk. Otherwise they were identical:

3.6L V6 / 226hp
6 sp manual

electronic goodies and some other stuff (I don't remember much except the test drive) afterwards I had to pop the hood to make sure it was a "6" I have owed two 5.0 Camaros, one auto, one 5 spd and NEITHER of them was ANYTHING like this, it felt like I had a much bigger V8 than my 5.0 AND I WASN'T EVEN GETTING ON IT!

I decided on Darth Camaro and since we didn't have time to work the deal last night, they put a "SOLD" sign in the window, parked it off to the side and hid the keys. OF COURSE the owner of the dealership is an awesome guy, he offered to let me take it home until Saturday morning! (He closes his stores on Christmas Day AND Christmas Eve so employees can have family time both days). Hmm, think about it, THREE days ... no snow, good weather an hour cruise home, then the obligatory "visits" to everyone ....

I couldn't do it. I just couldn't be responsible for someone else's stuff that cost that much, with a car ... there's just too much that can happen and with me not familiar with it's driving traits, I'm not positive I could drive myself out of a situation if I had to .... BUT if it becomes MINE ...................... B)

And I even LIKE that it's black (I'm in for it, I know)

Don !

Congratulations !!! I loved that story !!
What an incredibly happy ending !!!
Your Sweetheart Rocks !!!

Merry Christmas to you guys !
