The insurance company called me today, they're going to total the Aerio

The Kelly Blue Book Value is ~$1,700 and they are going to give me a bit over $3,700 and pay the taxes on the next car I buy. I've already talked to a good lawyer and being as it's just property damage, I'm pretty much stuck

They want me to give over the title to the Aerio by this Tuesday (12/22/2015) and are being "generous" enough to extend my rental to the end of the month to give me time to buy another car.

What really burns my biscuits is that I had an immaculate almost 10 year old car that ran great and it was paid off. Now because of a drunk, I'm going to have to have car payments that I really can't afford, and I really doubt I'll be able to get what I want in a car. All I'm asking for is a manual trans, a 6-disc in dash CD player and decent on gas because that's what I had until the lady lush smacked me

IMO you can buy a good car for $3700. No need for payments. Just be thankful that you are getting insurance money. Could be much much worse

That's the unfortunate side of having an old car, their value is so low that an insurance company will never pay for the repair, its cheaper for them to just total it. It may have been $5000 in repairs, and who pays that for a car worth $1700 ya know?

Sorry to hear that was the outcome. Good luck on finding a new vehicle!

There is no replacement for a reliable paid off car. It is not like you can buy one just like it in the same condition for what they pay you.

Sorry to hear Don. I just went through this exact same situation. Good luck with the replacement. If I could help in any way let me know. For example, if you find a vehicle here in FL that you need me to check out and send you pics (and even test drive), I'd be happy to do that.

A forum member told me before (I cannot recall who exactly) that another forum member did that for him and he bought the car sight unseen. I thought that was very nice.

I wish I could go to Florida to get a car, but time and $ (along with the wife's lack of a sense of humor) prohibit it ... I would LOVE the drive home. :)

sorry to hear that. a lot of us are in the same boat as you were. an older, dependable, paid off car, that if totaled, can't be replaced easily with a similar car. new car costs are pretty outrageous these days and their answer is to finance for 72 months or longer, which would be the only way I could go. unfortunately, a lawyer isn't going to waste his time to fight for you unless there's a lot of money in it for him.
you should be able to swing a pretty good year end sale price on a 2015 . here's a list of some of the less expensive rides. Top 10 Least Expensive Coupes, Affordable Small Cars and Compact Cars | Autobytel.com I was actually surprised there were any under $20,000. good luck.

Thanks for all the replies. I'm afraid a Brand New car is out of the question, so I will have to get a "New For Me" car. Fortunately I found a 2006 Subaru Legacy 2.5 GT for under $10K WITH ALL of my requirements: Manual, 6-disc, Decent on Gas and as a plus AWD. It's MPG isn't quite as good as the Suzuki's but I feel the AWD is a good trade off for NE Ohio and winter snow.

Unless you like doing head gaskets and adding lots of oil I would run, not walk, away from a 2.5 Subaru from that era. Not trying to down you at all, just looking out.

Thanks for the heads up, I take it the 2.5 GT Turbo is even worse then? This one has 140,000 miles

I just started checking around on a Legacy GT site and the head gaskets ARE an issue with the NON turbo engines, and they did say that the car can use oil in varying amounts. I will definitely go in with my eyes open and to be sure I don't do anything stupid, I'm taking another set of eyes with me. And with as fast as I rack up the miles, I'll be doing oil changes so often that it won't have time to leak out :P

I think any engine that has a turbo is going to be stressed a lot more when the boost is on, and that will have to have an effect on the internal engine parts sooner than if it was not under pressure...
Hope this is not the case with your project..
It looks like you want an all wheel drive vehicle that is close by - I am sure you will be able to find one, hope it works out for you..
Sorry this had to happen to you especially around this time of the year..

The AWD and turbo were an unexpected plus (I hope) when I discovered this car. I extended my internet search to 75 miles before I found the Subaru. Much more than that would have been prohibitive since I can't just up and say "I think I'll go look at the car." I have to take a day off work to go see it.

Too. even though I am 49 years old, I'm taking my dad with me, he likes to look at cars and he will keep me from getting in over my head, PLUS the wife has the final say as far as spending any money (don't you married guys just love that part?).

Finally, I trust in God to help keep me out of trouble. With all the ways he's shown himself to me this past year, I'm sure if there's something wrong with the car, something will happen to keep me from buying it. That's why I'm doing my research on the car, so I can see those little signs that scream "Don't buy it!"

I do appreciate all the concern shown to me by my Autopian brothers (and sisters) and I take your advice seriously.

I just have to keep reminding myself that this is the 1st car I'm looking at and not to get too excited, but dang it, I really do like what I've seen so far.

We own at 2012 Legacy Limited and the car is a sold performer for what it is. We have the 4 cyl model with al the bells and whistles and that AWD system is second to none. It blows my Infiniti AWD to shame and get through ever bit of snow the MDX does all with stellar fuel mileage. I did purchase an extended warranty as I do with most of my cars because I hold them for a while and its cheaper in the long run (I think).. Plus I get some piece of mind.

I am a big Subaru fan, there is a good forum legacyGT, most guys have turbos over there, I am the odd man out.

BTW, the manual on our Subie has the paddle shifters and its plenty fun to drive. Try one out before you rule it out. In traffic your clutch foot will love you.

I already found the LGT forum, that's where I'm asking my questions about the car & it's possible issues

140K on a used turbo car, it's a coin flip. Either the owner took care of it, or didn't. I would imagine being a boxer engine it would be hard to see in the valve cover through the oil fill to look in the valve cover. It's like VW, you either get a good one, or you don't.
