Detailing you car .... good for Diabetes?

Don

Darth Camaro 12/27/15
I recently found out I was diabetic and after taking my sugar numbers for about two weeks, I discovered that at the present moment my figures range between 280 and 380, just a little above what they should be.

Well the other day I spent the whole day giving my car it's first detail of the season, we're talking about 8 hours worth, I kept hydrated and all that, but didn't eat anything while working. When I was done, I felt a little "off," not bad, just off - so I took a sugar reading - 128 that's a MUCH better number than I have ever gotten before, I even checked it twice.

SO it seems like I have a VALID MEDICAL reason to give the wife for me detailing the cars ;) .... unless she realizes that heavy house work would probably do the same :(

Just a tip, that's a LOT above what they should be. 80-140 is the range you're looking for.

And as you've seen, exercise brings your #'s down drastically. You're better off however staying hydrated and eating small portions of food at consistent intervals than holding out waiting for a meal.

I know, I was just being facetious, I know my numbers are horrible, but like I said, it's only been a few weeks and I'm still adjusting to the diet/meds (I've never been much of a morning/lunchtime eater, so learning to eat at regular intervals is difficult...the smaller portions not so much) so it's not like I'm holding out, I'm just not hungry.

The main reason I posted was because I was literally shocked at the magnitude that detailing the car dropped my sugar levels ... over 200 points in just a few hours.

Yup, I got that last Saturday. Mine tends to hang under 175ish these days, but I was detailing the wife's minivan thing and started feeling loopy and checked mine and it was 60. Hope you do well with the meds and the diet, i have to deal with 2 kinds of insulin and it's no fun. No fun at all.

128 ain't bad. Up close to the 300s is pretty bad. I'm sure you been given the speech, but long term high blood sugar can lead to infections, kidney failure, eye issues, neuropathy, and cardiac issues.

Besides diet & expertise, there are tons of medications (injectables & non) that can help to control BS. I would implore you to keep an eye on this and keep it under control. Also, get yr A1c checked - this will give you a better idea of long term glycemic control over daily BS readings.

BTW, all the new BS meters are multi site testing - which means you don't have to prick your fingers anymore (multi site testing)... You can check on your forearms (etc...) where it's much less painful.

If you have any questions, about supplies or anything - feel free to PM me.

I've been a type 1 insulin dependent diabetic for 32 years I'm 34 and anytime your readings are that high and you do any type of exercise for that long it will always go down unless you keep eating carbs and sweets, but any exercise will help bring the numbers down.Detailing is great exercise. just make sure if you are doing any type of activity especially if your using equipment that your readings are not to low without eating something or you could pass out and go into hypoglycemic shock.Take breaks when doing something for that long and you should be fine.

I've only been at this about a month and I am taking meds for it (they said it could be a few weeks before the meds really start to take hold & will increase me if needed) as well as watching the diet (they said I could go hog wild on veggies and to a lesser extent protein). I'm not a big sweet eater, but I'll have to watch the carbs. My A1c is checked every 3-4 months. My ring finger on my right hand hasn't been complaining about being a pincushion yet so I check it there. I did notice slightly blurry vision which has cleared up with the meds.

But the best part is that now that spring/summer is here, I can detail like crazy ... with an excuse.

cant contribute to the medical end of this but can tell you that, if taken seriously, detailing can be a decent workout, or at least some minor cardio if you really keep moving (almost nobody moves like that, unless making $$$).

I don't think it's because I moved fast (I wasn't) I think it had such an effect on my blood sugar because I was at it so LONG.

Can't speak for the diabetic advantages but I can say detailing is good for the blood pressure (with a few exceptions.)

As for being good exercise, a few months ago I had a customer with a car in need of a lot of work but his budget was a little short and the car had enough issues that wouldn't be addressed by detailing. So I charged him half price while he became my helper for the day. He was happier with the results because he had a true understanding of what it took to achieve them than he would have been if he paid full price. By the end of the day he was huffing, puffing and groaning with every bend or squat. He is early-mid twenties and I am pushing 40. This business is not for those looking to make "easy money".

Car detailing is excellent low-level exercise. I do a lot of heart-rate monitoring, briskly detailing a car is similar to briskly walking, it cannot help but be good for blood glucose, blood pressure, etc.
