Camaro BLACKFIRE Duo Detail

My buddy got a great deal on a Camaro and said the first thing he did after finalizing the deal, was give me a call for a detail. He knew the paint needed a lot of work and he wanted it to look good for his Super Bowl party, so friends and family would drool over shiny black paint. I asked him to bring it over so I could inspect the paint and give him an estimate.

He ended up opting for the exterior paint detail only and Pinnacle Black Label Paint Coating as his protection.

The paint had your standard dirt, dust and water spots.

Unfortunately the matte finish vinyl stripes were in rough shape. I told him I would try to improve their look, but because they were matte finish I didn't have too much hope.

IMG_1667.JPG

The wheels were actually pretty clean.

IMG_1668.JPG

The car looked great from a distance in the shade....so I asked him to roll the car into the light to check for swirl marks...

IMG_1673.JPG

BOOM. Swirls galore.

The early bird gets the worm. I always like to set up all the tools/chemicals as early as possible so I'm completely setup when the car arrives. I know someone will ask me so I'm drinking Folgers Black Silk with vanilla creamer. :)

I've also been telling clients they get $20 off the detail if they arrive 15 minutes within their scheduled drop off time. It's been working great. As soon as I mention the discount, every client immediately has a positive reaction. I'll gladly give up $20 to start working on the car ASAP.

The car arrived on time and it looked worse than I remembered.

I washed with CarPro Reset, decontaminated with CarPro Iron X followed with a Nanoskin Wash Mitt (Fine Grade).

Tuf Shine Tire Cleaner/Iron X on the wheels and paint.

I pulled the car into the newly expanded garage and the new lights are great. They showed every imperfection in the paint.

IMG_1696.JPG

Ouch.

IMG_1697.JPG

I started by taping off all the vinyl decals and trim. I didn't want to make more work for myself by getting compound/polish on the vinyl.

Don't forget the antennae!

I grabbed my sisters FLEX 3401, Buff and Shine pads and my go-to polishing combo, BLACKFIRE Compound and Finishing Polish.

IMG_1709.JPG

I started by performing a test spot with the least aggressive combination. In this case, it was BLACKFIRE Finishing Polish with a White Buff and Shine Polishing Pad.

(AFTER)

The Finishing Polish did a great job. If this was my sisters Camaro I would've been happy with these results, but my friend had a Super Bowl party to throw and he was looking forward to impressing his friends and family with his new purchase. I thought I could remove more of the imperfections by using the compound first, then the polish. So a second test spot would be needed.

IMG_1711.JPG

For the second test, I used BLACKFIRE Compound with an orange Buff and Shine pad.

IMG_1717.JPG

The compound did a great job but left some DA haze, so a second polishing step would be required.

One of the benefits of detailing in the Show Car Garage is having access to a wide range of tools. I used the FLEX PE8 in the smaller panels.

IMG_1724.JPG

The RUPES TA50 became my best friend as it boldly went where no polisher had gone before.

At this point, half the car had been compounded and I decided to take this video:

(Watch in HD)

After compounding the entire Camaro, I switched over to a RUPES LHR15ES with an Orange Lake Country HD Orbial Pad to apply the BLACKFIRE Finishing Polish.

IMG_1734.JPG

I've always thought the RUPES polishers finish down AMAZING. There's something about the large orbital pattern with a light finishing polish that seems to squeeze out every inch of gloss possible.

After polishing the front clip...

Like a mirror.

After polishing, I drove the car outside to inspect the paint in sunlight. There were still some RIDS, but overall I was happy with the results.

IMG_1749.JPG

Then I wiped each panel carefully with a 12.5% dilution of IPA with an Arctic White MF Towel before applying Pinnacle Black Label Paint Coating.

When he picked up his car, I could tell he was excited. His eyes never left the paint and he said "This is how black paint is supposed to look."

I don't think I'll ever find out how his car was received at his Super Bowl party as I blocked his phone number around the 30 second mark in the 4th quarter.

We are no longer friends.

How did the matte vinyl overlays come out?

Not good. I tried cleaning one of the stripes with 303 Multi Surface Cleaner.

IMG_1743.JPG

Then I tried some Black Wow Pro.

IMG_1744.JPG

At first I was impressed.

IMG_1745.JPG

IMG_1746.JPG

Then after allowing it to dwell on the surface for about 10 minutes, I tried buffing it off with a general purpose MF towel and it all came off :(

IMG_1747.JPG

I think because they're matte, there's no way to really restore them. They'll have to be replaced or removed. For now he wants to keep them.

Yeah, I wondered about that. Awesome job on the rest of the car, as the owner of a black car, that's very impressive! That BF Duo is good stuff I think, easy to use and does a great job.

Thanks everyone. It was nice taking my time with this one. Detailing is really enjoyable when you take your time.
