Painters tape for a short road trip?

Would I affect my top coat of Natty's by using 3m painters tape to cover the front end for my upcoming road trip?

Looking at about 3 hours one way, but my concern is there is construction for most of the way and wouldn't mind an extra layer of protection on the front end that I have spent countless hours polishing over the past couple of years.

I know this is a popular thing to do for the road racing guys, just want to make sure there are no ill effects.

Anyone who has some knowledge in the matter feel free to chime in.

You might want to look into stuff called racer's tape, it will probably stick better than the painter's tape and offer more protection. I don't think painter's tape is really think enough to do what you want it to, this stuff probably is. And no, it shouldn't hurt the wax underneath.

Racers tape is similar to duct tape. Its the stuff they use to hold on their fenders after they hit the wall. You don't want this on your car.

I think the advice of two layers of wide blue painters tape is good.

This might be a wrong assumption, but painters tape shouldn't leave goop behind.....should it?

Thanks for everyones help to ease my obsesive problems with keeping the car clean.

The 3M blue painter tape will be fine. I have used it on my G ater a Zaino treatment or 3 for a 3hr ride to AC for HIN last year. It did the job and then some.

I've had some bad experiences with other brands using them in actual "painting" scenarios and I've always fallen back on the 3M brand. The 2" wide tape will work perfectly for your application. They will definitely not leave a residue if removed within a logical amount of time (ie, not days). If anything, just apply another coat of Natty's. That's always fun isn't it?

Good luck,

Mike

dont let the painters tape sit on the car too long when wet....i let some sit on my trim while doing a complete makeover on it and had to leave it outside overnight and lots of the glue is still on the trim to this day because its a bear to get off

Hey folks thanks for the ideas, I do really like the idea of the plastic wrap as the alternative is a bit more painful than a few remarks when the day is over.

I should have not prefaced the question about removing the Natty's, but more a question of overall safety for the paint, as we all know, there's nothing more relaxing than aplying bubble gum flavored paste wax?

I don't know how many other alternatives there are, but keep the thoughts flowing.

I have a blue 2000 civic si, lowered about 2.0 inches

On a 5hour road trip I tapped the whole front end/areas by my wheels/my front lip, it works out great, so easy to remove and there wasnt any gooy stuff. It really help protect my paint from rock chips from trucks and a billon of bugs.

I went home 3 days later, removed tape and everything was still smooth and fine.

3m tape $2.00+ at Walmart!

I've used the painters tape and it works great ...A friend recomended using plain old contact paper ...

I went to the dollar store and got some clear contact paper ...Cut it off the car to fit ...Walla ...Easy breezy somewhat invisible mask ...Upon removal no mess

Painters Tape was designed to be UV resistant, and easily removed after a period of time. It is not designed to be saturated with water.

To remove the adheive use a little Goo Gone or 3M adhesive remover.

This is interesting, are we talking about the contact paper that is used in the kitchen among other places?

Isn't that stuff mega sticky? I guess I've never used it per say.

Thanks

It's the standard contact paper it really doesnt stick well on a good wax job ,I've had the marbled looking stuff ....I cut flames out of it looked like a custom paint job :shocked

Last summer, I used the 3M blue painter's tape when I drove up to Syracuse, NY for the Z Nationals. It was about a five hour trip each way. The tape worked great. I had no problem taking it off and it did not leave any residue.
