    Question Cleaning an LT1

    Looks like this section needs some threads!

    So here goes - Ready to REALLY clean my engine for the first time. I am armed with some PS21 total wash, big detail brush (the motorbike one) and the instructions from PAC site.

    THe motor is a stock LT1 - is there any precautions I would take, like covering up some area or special care of any particular area in the engine bay?

    Or should I just spray it and scrub like *ell !! :devil:

    I always cover the alternator, computer and any other electrical parts with plastic bags prior to cleaning.

    I actually clean my engines with:
    Gunk Foaming Engine Cleaner or Purple Power APC.
    Soak 5 minutes.
    Scrub with a toilet brush.
    Rinse with a GENTLE trickle of water.
    Dry with an old bath towel.
    Spray with any vinyl/plastic/rubber dressing (CD2 or Stoner TrimShine).
    Let soak for 5 minutes.
    Wipe with a demoted MF.
    Done.

    the PCM is under the air cleaner, should be safe and dry with a gentle rinse.

    PAC says block off air intake, thats easy to do. Yeah I will take some photos with my new LG phone they look quite good.

    You can, for the most part, spray pressured water into modern engine compartments. PAC doesn`t offically recommend this, neither do I, but I might do this often, maybe...

    Keep in mind that you do not want to spray pressurized water at electical equipment, computers, alternators, ect

    Also, be very careful of the `Opti-Spark` igintions on early LT1 engines (located in the front of the motor). If they get too wet they will not work properly.

    In general I cover all eletrical or senstive equipment with alumnium foil, because I can shape it tightly over the shapes. Then I apply the degreaser, either Eimann Fabrick Engine Degreaser or Meguiar`s Super Degreaser, spraying it liberally on the fenders, fire wall, engine, ect. Agitated the solution with various brushes, then rinse completely clean.

    If you have compressed air, blow out the majority of standing water first. Use a towel to absorb any standing water. Remove the aluminum foil (completely) then start the engine and close the hood. Let the engine get up to full operating tempature to dry it thoroughly.

    Wouldnt ya know it...

    I was about done - And it began to rain.

    Motor looks a lot better tho there are still some stubborn (greasy) spots I will need to work on more aggresively. B/C I had to pull car inside I didnt get very good "after" pics (2 dark) but will try to shoot some later.

    Todd I fergot all about that Opti...but car started O.K.
