Zaino'd ZO6 with a TWIST...

Hey guys,

Spent my weekend working on this ZO6. This is an interesting one. Normally I like to start off by assessing the paint. There was absolutely nothing on this car. It looked ok from 4ft, but any closer, the paint was lackluster and "whited out." Of course my camera couldn't really capture how bad the paint really was before hand. Swirls were moderate,... so I thought. I figured a little ZPC on a black lake country pad should do the trick right? WRONG. So I decided to step it up a bit; ZPC on an Orange Pad.... NADA! Now I decided to bring in the big guns Menzerna 106FF on a white pad. 106FF is usually my solve most anything. Not this time. Finally i said "screw it," and reached for the IP and the orange pad. Still no luck. Now I am totally out of ideas. I have never had this happen. So I was looking through the detailing arsenal and found a bottle of 4Star LLC. Yea, you heard correct, cheap stuff. I haven't used this stuff in about a year, because the last couple of cars I did with it, it did nothing for the paint, and was most unimpressive. Out of options I decided to give it a try. This time, it scored some really big points. It was amazing on this hard CC. Whipped this ZO6 right into shape. You guyz with Vettes give it a try, you will be very impressed.

Anway, here is the process:

Wash with Dawn

Clay with Meguiars Clay Bar and Dawn Water Mix

Wash with Dawn again

4Star LLC on Orange pad @ 1500RPM

Wash with Dawn AGAIN

ZPC on Black Pad @ 1500 RPM --> Finishing at 900RPM

Z6

Z5Pro

Z6

Z2

Z8

Z16 on Tires

Glass - Stoner IG

95% Swirl Removal

Enjoy...

Not sure what that product is, but are you sure it didn't just fill in the defects??

With the Vette clear I typically have to pull out the wool pads to get anything accomplished....

The car looks good except those yellow rims.... what were they thinking??:lol

No joke. I'm surprised anything below IP/Orange was even tried at all.

Car looks great now.

the car itself looks great, but the inner barrels of the wheels dont seem clean, unless the inner barrels arent supposed to be yellow...

I was awaiting your post. I really didn't have anything harder I could hit it with. Unfortunately, 4Star products are body shop products, so I can only imagine they are filled with oils and fillers. What I "tried" to do to prevent it from filling the swirls was to wash the car with a heavy concentration of dawn and water because the purpose of dawn is to cut grease. Upon doing so, it did bring back "some" light swirls, as expected. So next I finished it off with ZPC on a black pad. ZPC is not supposed to have any fillers. At that point the finish was about 95% perfect as far as I was concerned. Hopefully the swirls will not come back, only time will tell.

I did a similar process on my 96 Impala (Zaino) and it was a good couple of months before the swirls came back. Also, my girlfriend has a black Vette, which surprisingly I got excellent results from IP on Orange, and Zaino. Its been washed about 7 times since, and has revealed very few swirls.

What do you normally do to make sure the products is not hiding the swirls?

GM Clear is always rock hard, but a couple of times I have gotten away with SMR or ZPC on White or Orange if the swirls were not that bad. I am starting to realize, car to car varies. Not even all corvettes, GTO's, Impala's, Malibu's are created equal. Generally I like to try and hit a section with the lightest stuff first, and then slowly reach for harsher compounds.

The wheels are very interesting. The barrels of the wheels are painted yellow, and then they were lightly sprayed with black... so you have a speckled yellow. It looks cool I guess but i don't understand why it was done.

eh, i think a straight yellow would have been just fine, even when they are clean, they will look dirty...
