Z and Carnuba

I was thinking..always a dangerous thing:D



Sal says that the oils in carnuba will eventually attack the Z layers over time...Ive personally seen how durable Z is and was wondering why "oils" would remove Z when it seems like nothing else would (dirt,road salt, bird bombs, etc)...



Also why would adding a Carnuba topper be any different than when using Klasse?? If you add a topper to Z and like the results, why couldnt you just re-apply the Z layers every 6 months?? Of course you would have to make sure there was no wax left..
 
FWIW, and this is purely speculation on my part:



I don't believe that carnauba really breaks down Z. I think that what happens is that the Z is so slippery and hygroscopic that as the wax starts to break-down while on top of the Z that the owner will dislike how it looks (streaky, hazy, etc). Then, he/she will try to apply another layer of Z which will have trouble bonding to the oily surface (from wax). So, perhaps Zaino recommends not using carnauba because they don't want to have layering/bonding issues after a carnabua topper has been applied? Sort of like engine manufacturers saying you shouldn't use synthetic oil for the first 5K miles - just easier to say that than to explain the whole process/problems/reasoning?



I too, have noticed that Z is nearly bulletproof (despite once being the biggest skeptic), and would doubt that Z would be broken down by a wax. The other thought that I have on this is that perhaps the abrasives in some waxes could "score" the Z and allow oils to penetrate beneath the Z...but this is pretty far-fetched.



Regarding the K & C connection, I truly believe that with Klasse, it doesn't last as long as Z, so when the wax starts to wear-off/disolve, and the user puts another layer of carnauba over top of the K, they're waxing a bare panel. Then, after 6 months or so, they strip any existing carnauba, and reapply the Klasse/carnauba. Again, this is all speculation on my part, based on what I've seen with our tests...

I found it's best to choose one or the other.
 
Most Zaino users discourage using carnauba on top of Zaino and it makes perfect sense. Zaino strives to achieve optical clarity and putting a carnauba on top seems to "muddy" the overall clarity. If you are looking for a warm finish, go with carnauba. For an awesome reflection, Zaino can't be beat. Never mix the two as the results will not be desirable.
 
It's not so much that the oils will remove Zaino, but the solvents found in most carnauba fomulations that will break it down over time allowing the oils to get under the Z layers... It's true, Z is very durable, but it's still susceptible to being stripped or degraded by solvents.



So, it's not recommended to add anything over Zaino. Can you? Sure you can add whatever you like in reality, but, it hinders adding more Z coats and takes away from the whole reason Zaino was created in the first place, to offer incredible optical clarity and unmatched durability. Adding toppers to Zaino defeats 30 years worth of hard work done by Sal and his chemists...
 
I wasn't too impressed with the way my car looked after applying Souveran on top of Zaino. It seemed to detract from the relatively 'unique' look of Zaino. Quite a different story however when applying Souveran on top of Klasse or a glaze.

well, my now carnaubaless Klassed finish since December (November had soveran) is doing fine. And it snowed today, grrr. It seems like forever before I'll be able to try Z out.



I think however, that the people who use Klasse without toppers can still vouch for Klasse's durability without it.

Yeah, otherwise he'd be singing to the tune of how the acrylic in Klasse STARTS to break down after two years... :D
