Wow! LS1 gets owned by a Saturn...

Listen to that SS! I dont know what he has for an exhaust, but it's the exact one that I would want if I had an LS1 car. I saw that video a while back on the Impala forum. That's cool that he got that saturn moving like that, but I think I would pick a little cooler car to dump all that cash into. I think I would take the bolt on SS...hell, even a STOCK SS over that Saturn. I think it is a bit faster than 13.6 though...did he post his trap speed anywhere? My bud's MKIII Supra went 13.60's @ 112 and it definitely wouldnt walk a bolt on LS1 car like that. The SS ought to atleast go high 12's if it's as the video says a "bolt on car."

Ls1 Fbodies can do mid 13's without even trying. Credit should go to the saturn's driver if that was the times that he posted. Now if the Fbody had one or two bolt-ons and a good driver, then that match could've been different. Who knows, because there are so many ways to make a car fast besides adding cylinders!

Well, the cost of mods is probably the same or less than on any other car. And the cost of the car was probably hardly anything.

I thought it was pretty cool. If he had a Camaro going that fast, though guys would have been like "cool, sweet car". But a 4-door beige Saturn going that fast?? You heard those guys, they were like "no freaking way!!!"

To me, it's pretty cool to see such a boring sleeper car like that running a turbo and smoking unsuspecting people. Granted, like you, I would not want that car. I'd take the Camaro too (well, really I'd take an older 'vette, which is exactly what I did). But it sure is cool and funny to see that Saturn flying away like that!

Scott, do you think that "136" on the window was his dial-in? I figured he'd probably just gone to a test-n-tune type thing and that was just his identifier. Car #136. :nixweiss

Don't know for sure either but I though I heard him say something about it when he was talking to the camaro guys.

I hear ya on the cost of the car thing. The new trend in this area is to have the most ratted out civic hatchback bathed in luxurious black primer and gutted interior, and lowered on stock wheels or hubcaps but a built "engine swap" under the hood. Being into detailing, that just doesn't fly with me. I think I would rather have a car that looks good and goes fast. IMO, if you look up sleeper in the dictionary, I think there should be a picture of a Buick Grand National. I used to hate the whole sport compact thing...back in highschool, I was looking through Summit racing at heads/cam combos and everyone else was looking at which disgusting looking set of plastic bumpers and sideskirts they could get on their car.

I'll admit that the sport compact thing has kinda grown on me, and I've even seen some that I liked...a lot of them on this board (GSRstilez, ebpcivicsi to name a few). Anyway, I actually go the dragstrip and run my car, and watch others run. All the compact guys have a fit over this guy who runs 12's in his gutted out, not street legal hatchback, while my buddy clicks off 11.80's @ 120+ on street tires in his Mustang, turns the A/C on and drives home in comfort. 12's in a hatchback are impressive, dont get me wrong, I guess it's just not my thing. For daily driving, I am looking for a Honda because I know they are good cars.

Heheh, I was in college when I was flipping through Summit catalogs. I didn't have a car in high school. I still get them, but don't really flip through them anymore. I do buy from them, though, when I get parts they carry, since they have great pricing. They don't have much in the way of ZR-1 parts, though.

But that Saturn wasn't a sport compact. It wasn't all body-kitted or anything. It just looked like a regular old Saturn, except lowered. In fact, it even looked pretty clean and shiny in the video. :)

What's your SS run the 1320 in? Is it stock?

The sport compact thing has *not* grown on me... I can appreciate making a car fast, but not making it hideous... ;)

But this car was just so inconspicuous. And if he lost, so what? If his car was all riced and he lost, he'd get a lot of crap. If it had a big wing and fenders and body vents and such, I don't think those reactions in the video would have been the same. My favorites are when the driver says "are you fooing kidding me??" in that laughing stuttering voice of disbelief after that thing just walked away from him, and later when the passenger goes "That's disgusting..." as the Saturn is dissappearing in the distance while this Camaro is giving it all it has.

I dunno, something about it just appeals to me. I have to give respect to that Saturn. Sure it's not an enviable car, but man is that cool what it can do.

UNfortunately last year in the heat of August the best I could get out of her was a 14.6. It's got more in it, and it should do high 13's in November at the SSHS5. My bud has a car that has an almost identical setup to mine, and he went 13.80 @ 98ish last year at the shootout.

Yeah, it's cool that it's that quick. I do have a soft spot for the 4th gen F bods though. I'd like to see those two cars run from a stop. They'd both have to be on sticky tires though.

You dont really need to do anything to a ZR-1. Guy that my dad used to work with had a 94 ZR-1 and I think it's making like 515 to the tires. I rode in it, it's very fast.

I'm guessing it's not stock, then? I've had a few friends with SS's and they don't run that stock. One guy had pulleys, ram air (one that went down to the chin spoiler), and a few other bolt-ons and couldn't get into the 14's.

Nor does a ZR-1 put 515 to the wheels stock... ;)

For now I just want to get my Z in tip-top shape and enjoy it a bit and get used to the stock power. Then I'd like to do exhaust and headers probably and some time in the future (probably years in the future, this car's a keeper) I'd like to get a Lingenfelter or Callaway 350 package done, putting the car around 475-500 crank horsepower. I think that'll be enough for a street-driven car. Though in stock form it still amazes me when I put the hammer down in 2nd or 3rd and those secondaries open up...

Like I said in a post in another thread, it's more fun to do more with less. Imagine what the owner of the SS was feeling as this "POS" Saturn was walking his monster V8. PRICELESS!

Nope, not stock. Basically, I have a built drivetrain from the 9.5 inch 3000 stall (which I also didnt have when I went 14.60s..had a 12 inch 2400 stall then) built trans, built rear with 3.73's, home made intake (I used to have the RAMIT that runs through the air dam, but it would always pick up junk from the road, and it's just not safe for a lowered car), shorty headers, and a www.pcmforless.com tune. I've got other little things here and there like an electric water pump and things, but nothing major.

Yeah, the dude I know with that ZR-1 had tuneable exhaust on it. You could adjust the flow...he usually keeps it wide open. Stock form on that Z ought to keep ya happy for a while. From the pics the car looks like it's in tip top shape.

NOTHING beats this video. How humiliated can you be...link

EDIT: A footnote as to why you would want to mod a Saturn like that? What's better than smoking any jabronie in a Camaro or Vette in a total sleeper car...???

That Saturn runs faster than a 13.6. The "136" on his window is not his 1/4 time...its his race number for the strip. They paint it on your window so the tower can see what cars are racing.

Judging by the way that SS got walked I'd say he is running low 12's possibly high 11's. A stock 6 speed SS with a good driver will run mid 13's...a bolt on car with a good driver and tires can touch high 12's. Kudo's for the f-bod guys giving respect to where it is due instead of making excuses as to why they lost.

As far as cost to power ratio...screw it. That guy has one heck of a sleeper on his hands. Looks like a stock Saturn with chopped springs (even has stock rims)...I would have taken his bait for sure. Imagine how many street races he wins!! :xyxthumbs

I used to run low 13's with my slightly modded LT1 z28 at Englishtown raceway. The fastest cars there now on street night believe it or not are dodge neons.........
