Would you travel 2.5 hours?

I got a call today from an owner's forum I belong to for a full detail. The guy lives in North Jersey which is a little less that 2.5 hours away. We set a date for 8/18, but I immediately second guessed the appointment. It's for a fellow enthusiast and I can really zip on the car because I know it so well (as I own the same model). I normally charge $255 for the process I will perform (Compound, Polish, Seal, and Wax + Interior). Would you travel the distance or would you recommend I upcharge. Bag it before it gets to close? Whaddyall think?

2.5 hours is a long *** way. Id turn it down unless he paid an extra 100-150. 5 hour rould trip inlcuding gas, food and down time is costly.

yes, or have him bring it up to you. there's no reason in taking a serious cut in what you will make and also take up 5 hours of your day on top of an already large chunk of your day gone to detailing to not make $. i would say charge him $30-40 extra personally

5 hours of travel time could be another detail you could get in for the day. If you have nothing better to do it's one thing but if your relying on this as your livelihood you should be compensated for it . :buffing:

upcharge for the mileage....thats another 2.5 hours on your car, gas, wear and tear, down time, etc

figure in cost of materials and gas, nonw subtract that from your pricing and that is what you are getting for profit...doesnt look so good now does it....unless compensated for it, I wouldnt do it...20 miles is the furthest I travel without compensation, not 100+

It's honestly up to you. I usually charge $20 for each additional hour of driving I have to do.

And not to step on any toes, but I do service Northern Jersey. It's a hair over an hour for me. If you want, I can help you out. Just let me know.

That's very reasonable pricing. If you have a good reputation people will pay extra for your service-especially if you have to travel very far.

Agreed.

I would charge a mileage/gas fee and like other's have already said, you also should be compensated for the time your spending getting there and back....especially if this is your livelihood (SP?).

Thanks for the advice to all of you. I was contacted by another forum member in the same area and I may be able to schedule a two-fer. I did some calculations and figured it would cost me about $45 to drive there (gas + wear) and too much of a headache. Add materials and my own time (which is currently being spent finalizing my US Naturalization Process-- I swear in the day before :usa :getdown ).....I think I am going to refer it. It is part of my livelihood, but I have enough to keep me busy locally for now. I was just trying to pull a solid for my Passatworld homey, but I am sure he will understand. Thanks again for your thoughts. I will contact those interested in the job via PM.

I just drove 3 hours there and back to do details....

2 Porsche Cayenne Turbos, 2 boats, H2 and a Z06 Vette. He paid for my hotel and lunches. It was definitely worth it, made well over $1000.

I detailed a dodge PU truck, a tacoma, a Seqoua and a Vette 20 minutes from my house.

Took me 12 hours but I also made $1000. I was happy that night.

Didn't work next day :D
