Working on Race Cars..Little Advice?

Just One More Coat
I will be at the personal shop for Ron Herrerias later today...My card was given to his assistant earlier this week for a detailing....what they are looking for is to clean the outside up....anyone know of any special requirements for these details?...Again I will not be working on the inside of this car its a full blown non-street legal Porsche race machine. This link is to one of the many web site this guy appears on....I can't even tell you how thrilled I am to be looking and working on this guys car, with hopes of a network into this group of racers.

Wow... congratulations!

If that is the same car as you'll be working on, it looks like probably just clear-coat paint like usual. I would maybe ask them if it has gelcoat or anything odd on it like that before you start, though.

Thanks

The car that I will be looking at is a 05 and brand new for him....color or any of that I'm not sure yet....(will keep you posted) My concerns like yours is what have they done to the pain. The decals are these on the surface or are they clear coated over, if its the later of the two then no big deal if not then special consideration would have to come into play

Obviously I have no idea on this particular car but many of the decals on race cars today are done in a vinyl wrap. Vinyl as in no paint showing just colored and logoed vinyl. Aerodynamics are everything.

Agreed. However, I doubt you'd have to treat it too much different than you would a car with pinstriping tape or something of that nature. Tape up the edges and away you go!

I woldn't even worry about that.. The ambulances and fire trucks i do have no problem with polishing over the stickers.. also I did that dragster and it was fine with it also..

Good to know.... I actually ended up peeling the edge on a vinyl decal off a brand new uhaul cargo van once (I had rented it and one of the people I was working with scratched the door... so I hit it with the rotary before I returned it lol) but that was probably just because it WAS a brand new van (less than 500 miles on it at the time!)

if you have any doubts just apply a polish by hand. i doubt they are looking for long term protection just alot of bling

Be careful with the stickers. I'm also a sign man, i deal with all sorts of wraps, decals, etc.

Don't go over zippin over it like you would paint. There are many grades of vinyl, along with their many purposes. If its thin you'll melt right thru it in a heartbeat. You could also heat it up enough to put wrinkles in it.

All you need is a mild polish by hand. If that don't work, the stickers need replacing.
