Wiper Blades - Streaking

ok, I wrote to Autoglym with the same question I'm going to ask you guys and the reply was"go talk to your dealer"



I have a two month old Honda Accord 2.4 Type-S (Europe, remember, or as you guys would know it, an Acura TSX).



The wipers on the car are already streaking quite badly and I've tried just about everything on the windscreen. My question....



Other than going to the dealer and having them replaced, do any of you have a magic non-secret formula to the perfect windscreen wipe? I though of applying some Autoglym Vinyl and Rubber care to the wipers to remoisturise them, but would welcome your thoughts.

Firstly welcome to Autopia!



Remember the Search button is your best buddy here but....



I wouldn't use AG vinyl & rubber care on them as it'll smear all over your glass and make an even bigger mess!



Try cleaning your blades thoroughly with what we'd call meths (denatured alchohol?) until you get no black residue at all - your blades will then be pretty much as clean as you can get them.



Now hit the sreen - clay first, as this is a great way to remove all the grime and crud, some of which you can't even see. I'd then follow with a couple of coats of AG glass polish (the pale blue liquid polish).



Sounds to me like you have some grease or other contaminant on your screen.
 
Thanks for the speedy reply. I will try that out as well. I was going to hit the screen with the clay, but hadn't had time to do it yet. I hadn't thought about the meths (methylated spirit) idea and will try that too. One thing though, would that not compromise the rubber on the wiper blades, i.e., dry them out?
 
Good point but it's never caused me a problem (although I've only done this maybe 2 or 3 times annually). If you're worried you could dilute the meths with water. All you're looking to do is get the blades as clean as possible - my usual weekly routine is to clean the blades with normal shampoo solution using an old MF to get them really clean - not easy this time of year.
 
AndyC, Right on target about the cleaning . The clay will clean the glass, CLEAN. I read somewhere that using a glass top(Cook top) cleaner/polish on the windshield, makes it come out good. Best to test a small area first.

TOGWT, that's just the problem. The range of products available on the rock is limited to the old Turtle Wax products, Autoglym, some meguiars and nothing else.



I'm too busy with settling down in my career right now to delve into setting up a proper car detailing place with the best of the world's products. I mean I've only recently learnt by browsing this website about Zymol, Klasse and other brilliant stuff like the 303 wiper treatment, cleaner clays, solutions and other wonders...



maybe one of these days. In the meantime, I just need to start buying stuff from the states or the UK online...

Steaking can also be caused by defective blades, damaged or misaligned arms. If the arms have springs, check that they are roughly the same, make sure all the bolts etc are nice and tight.



Lighter fluid is also a good method of cleaning glass - wipe on, leave for 10 minutes and flush with water.



Given the age of the car, I would take it back to the dealer and get them to fix it.
 
I have had good luck with using 0000 steel wool on the windshield after I have cleaned the wiper blades thoroughly. Your new car may have picked up some fallout that landed on the windshield. After the steel wool I have had good luck using Stoners Invisible glass. Good luck ,Frank
 
selwynf, I have an ACURA TSX and had the same problem.



The cure was to clean the windshield wiper blades. I sprayed some STONER's INVISIBLE GLASS on a rag, and then wiped the blades down with it. That got rid of most of the gunk. Then, I applied 303 wiper treatment to the blades, and Rain-X to the windshield. I have zero streaking now.



BTW, 303 Aerospace Protectant or Vinylex are also goods cure for the rattles in sunroofs that seem to afflict these cars. I cleaned all the rubber and gaskets around the sunroof with Vinylex, and a now it is 100% squeak free.

I have found if I take a rag, soak it with alcohol, and rub the rubber blade on it to get all the dirt off it, the wipers work alot better. :)
 
hi all, hope y'all had yourselves a merry christmas...



I had the wiper blades replaced and now there's no streaking just immaculately quiet and streak free wiping all the time.



thanks for all the tips though, I'm sure they'll come in handy for when these blades start to go off...
