Winter preparation

Hi guys. relatively new to posting but have been hanging around the site for about a year.

I have a question concerning layering of different products.

As the title stated, I am getting my car ready for winter, or winterization.

I have already caught the detailing bug and rarely go more than a month without applying something to the car. But, with winter coming, I will have less chances to wash and maintain the exterior of my vehicle. I think that I may not get a chance to really, fully detail it for 3-4 months when it is the coldest considering I do not have a garage to keep it in or work in.

BTW, I live in the North East and our winters are notoriously brutal especially on our cars.

My car is not garage kept and is a daily driver so protection is of the upped most importance.

Ok, so far I have applied AIO X2 and the KSG X2 waiting 24 hrs apart for each layer.

My question is as follows.

I would like to eventually top with Collinte Super double-coat followed by a few layer of 845. What can I layer in between the Klasse High gloss Sealant glaze, that won't compromise the durability of either the KSG or the adhesion of the collinite topper.

I was thinking of using Optimum Opti-seal OR Ultimata Paint guard Plus, both of with I have in my arsenal but both off which I have NEVER used before.

Or, maybe just put on a layer of Wolfgang High Gloss Sealant.

Please, any suggestions would be most welcome!!!!

Thank again,

your fellow detailing enthusiast. http://autopia.org/forum/images/smilies/washwax.gif

audiRS4- For the last few winters I've compared 476S and KSG on different winter-use vehicles. Based on my experiences, you'd be *MUCH* better off layering on more KSG. Get six or more layers on there and you should be all set.

While I do like 476S, it simply doesn't work as well for me as heavily layered (and that's the key) KSG; 476S doesn't layer the same way either, in case you were wondering.

Seriously. Six or more layers of KSG will form a semi-permanent build film (asMike Phillips described it) that will outlast the Collinite by a good margin.

If somebody's only gonna do one/two applications or so, then yeah, the 845/476S approach is great. But if you can layer heavily, KSG is really something else.

thank you for the reply. What about using Optiseal or Ultima Paint Guard Plus over the KSG. Maybe doing a few layers of one of them?

What I have done to the cars I prepare for winter, 3 layers of Ultima Paint Guard Plus then topped off with Swissvax Saphir.

When I run out of Swissvax I'll be buying on of the Dodo Juice waxes.

Nope. This is *JUST IMO*, and I've never used OptiSeal or UPGP, but I'd just stick with the KSG. While it's not a look I really like on certain paints, as far as protection/durability/etc. goes I really can't imagine anything working out better. The way it leaves a discernible build-film on top of the paint (like a plastic coating) when you layer it enough really impresses me.

Noting that I just do my dog-haulers once and then (only) wash 'em for ages, if I thought I could do better than the KSG I'd try something else on the minivan.

I tried 476S on the other dog-hauler for the past few years, and this year it's wearing FK1000P, so we'll see how that compares to the KSG.

KSG continues to be the benchmark because by the time it needs redone the vehicle needs correction anyhow (and that's saying something considering how little my vehicles get marred up).

My car has about 12 coats of Klasse SG on it (lost track) by the much quicker and easier WOWO method (Wipe on Wipe off). You spread the SG on a section, count to about ten, and then very lightly and quickly buff it off. A thin layer dries on the surface as you whisk over the paint with the fluffiest towel you can find, leaving behind a dry, slick and streak free coat of sealant. Over a three day weekend you can apply two coats a day for 6 coats of protection! With 12 layers my car looks candy coated. That'll get you through a winter! :)
