Windshiled Swirls, Medium to Deep Scratches.

HEllo guys

My car's windshield has Swirls, Medium to Deep scratches on its surface. Iwas wondering if Wet sanding and buffing will work to remove those swirls. Hoping for your help on this matter thank you.
 
Which product depends on how bad your scratches, swirls, etc., are, and do you have either a drill or a PC, or a Rotary or none of the above?

Look at the kits at the bottom of the Diamondite Brand and you will see a kit for a drill, a PC or by hand.

Hopefully, your glass defects are not too bad, and one of these kits can help remove what you have on your glass.

If not, there are other products that are stronger that will remove deeper defects but will require more care so that you dont heat up the glass to much and warp it.

Can you please elaborate for my friend Angelo, who replied to your question, with more details or hopefully a picture of the glass? Are these wiper scuffs, wiper scratches, both, etc.. ?

Glass is MUCH harder then paint. Wetsanding with paint grade sand paper then polishing is going to get you no-where but frustrated. It is possible to remove wiper marks and light defects with a cerinum oxide abrasive, a rotary polisher, and heavy pressure.

Deep marks in the glass mean you have to remove a lot of material which will change the angle of the glass and could create a fish-bowl or lens effect.
 
I did my windshield with Diamond Fast - Cerium Oxide Glass Polishing Compound (found at Amazon) & glass polishing pads from Griots.

I am very happy with the results.

Couple lessons learned:

  • Even with a glass specific polish it takes a while so be patient
  • Work small areas at a time. I divided my windshield into six sections
  • It made A LOT of dust
  • The polish needs a little moisture to work. Use too much water and you get a mess. Use too little and the polish can clump up, gets difficult to remove and dusting gets even worse. Have a spray bottle handy.
  • Tape off all the joints and openings anywhere near the windshield
  • Be extra careful with the first few washes after using the glass polish. Use lots of water and watch for any polish residue
