Whole Quart Of Latex Paint On Roof

The Grand Marquis Man
A reader on The Motley Fool has a problem: his car was vandalized by someone dumping a whole quart of blue latex paint onto the roof of his white car. They even left the can. He tried to clean it off, but his roof is now a light blue color.

People have recommended that he clay his car to remove the residue.

How would y'all handle this problem, short of filing an insurance claim?

Charles

I would probably try some mineral spirits on it to see what that did. If I didn't see an immediate improvement, then I would file an insurance claim. Not everything can be fixed in the garage. I would file the claim and say "Whoo hoo!! New paint job!"

Mineral spirits is a good idea. If that didn't work I'd try polishing a small section with some light cut polish, maybe SSR 2 or Optimum polish on a polishing pad. if that didn't do anything definitely file the insurance claim.

Just a thought.
If the car had some wax/sealant on it, the latex paint might almost peel off in large pieces. Try rubbing it with your thumb to see if you can start some of it coming loose.
Latex paint seems to not adhere as well as some paints which in this case would be a good thing.

That's a good idea.
Also, if he is going to repaint, get permission from the insurance company to try some things. For example, paint thinners for latex don't always thing base/clear paint jobs on cars. Try everything you can learn:
1. Compounding
2. Claying
3. Plastic Razor blade & a heat gun (not too close)
4. Methyl Hydrate, then move to heavier thinners

This is your chance--and you can't make it any worse!

i say just go to the insurance company skip all the fuss bucause if you make it worse than it is then maybe they wont give u the money.

I would personally recomend going to the insurance company first.
Because if it does not come off, the insurance may deney the claim(for what ever reason) and then he is stuck with a funky blue car, that he may have to pay for to repaint.

The insurance would be a good start and then as someone said see if they would let you try some other things beside repaint.....I know that laquer thinner will take it off but that's super agressive.....I've used it but then it takes allot of care to get off.....try mineral sprits, polish to start then work your way up..Hard to say unless you can put your hands on it

Since latex paint is a water based paint it should come off it should come off easily if he has a good coat of wax or sealant. I would also call the local paint store and ask for suggestions.
