White sidewall tires coming back???

The Rainmaker
In the past week, I have seen two, maybe three, late model vehicles with true whitewall tires. Not lowriders, not young people, but just run-of-the-mill every day cars.
Is this the new In thing?
I didn't even know they were still made.

What kind? I'd sure like to have them back. My '89 Deville has the exact brand and model of ww tires as original. :bigups

With any luck, I might be able to find out more in the next few days. As I remember them, they were probably the 1" wide ones. The brand I didn't see at all. It was just a passing by and notice thing.

Charles: You are a mind reader!!!

I have been thinking about this for the past week or so. I don't know what people really see in them. I like my all black tires :)

What exact vehicles are we talking about? I don't see any recent ones with typical white wall tires like mine. Closest thing are spaghetti thin ones on Town Cars sometimes and those yellow Vogue types on some newer Caddies

:dunno

I was lookin at my friend's GQ and Scion had a pullout ad for their new tC. The tC had white wall tires, since the tire isn't that big the stripe wasn't huge like the older cars, but it wasn't tiny either. The tC was a pearl white and I think if you put mirror tints on it with the white wall tires it'd look pretty hot and different.

I know the 1-inch ones were made up to at least the late 90's. My mom used to have a 1981 Buick Skylark that had those white-walled tires and as far as I can remember, they were always replaced with white-walled tires up until we sold it in 1999.

Black tires in performance or low profile were somewhat of a rarity when I started using them back in the 80's. The first time I used them, I had to buy white lettered tires and have the white letters turned to the inside. The guy that was mounting them for me couldn't understand why I would buy white lettered tires and put the letters inside. I don't think he understood why I had no chrome on the vehicle and the grille was completely blacked out, either.
It's kind of like riding a motorcycle, if you have to explain, they won't understand anyway.

Charles & BIll check out this site. www.coker.com
Coker has the whitewall tires, but the vehicles I saw sure weren't collector cars. In fact, I think one of them was a mini-van.
FWIW, I don't have any interest in buying any. I was just surprised to see them on a daily driver. :)

Well I need to pick up a set of the old 2" ones for my 59. I wonder how these would look on my service van?

i think some cars just look better in white walls, certain luxury cars do
i had a park avenue and it would have looked awfull with black walls with the wheels it had IMO

Same here, a Town Car just doesn't look right to me with total black walls.

Sure they still make those. I've had those on every set of tires I've ever bought, except for the tires on my '04 Grand Marq. When I buy replacement tires, I will buy whitewalls.

Here's a neat trick for cleaning whitewalls, that a dear departed neighbor showed me some 25 years ago:

Use a wet Brillo pad or S.O.S. pad on the dirtiest of whitewalls. You don't have to bear down, just move the pad around the tire a few times until it is good and soapy. Hose off the soap, and repeat if you've missed any stubborn stains. The whitewall will come out perfectly (as in like brand-new) white!

One pad can be used for all 4 tires, but I like to use use one pad for 2 tires. By the time one pad gets to the 3rd and 4th tires, the soap may be gone.
