Which Exhaust?

My PC goes to 7...
I'm looking for a relatively quiet high-flow muffler for my V6 supercharged Tacoma. I put a Borla cat-back system on it about a year ago, but it's just too loud for my taste (especially since I put the s/c on). Even at "normal" acceleration it sounds like I'm running a freakin' race, and that makes me feel like an idiot taking off from stop lights. The stock Tacoma muffler is about the size of a home water heater and has just about no sound at all. I'm looking for something with a nice mellow tone that is somewhere between the stock and Borla sound.

I've read that the Flowmaster 50-series delta flow is not too obnoxious. Can anyone comment on this one?

What else is there that's not too loud? I'm not all that concerned about the amount of air the muffler will flow -- my fuel delivery system can barely keep up with the supercharger as it is. I'm more interested in the sound.

Look for Walker Quietflow mufflers. They are made by the same company as Dynomax, and flow very well while maintaining almost stock sound levels. Any muffler shop that carries Dynomax should be able to provide you with some Quietflow mufflers.

Walker makes Dynomax and I loved the Dynomax on my 4.3L Sonoma. I now am a bigger fan of Magnaflow though. Not loud at all, nice rumble, great flow, and nicely built.

I was in the same situation with the quiet exhaust,I bought a Gibson swept side nice mellow tone. But no head ringing noise. Its on a 02 Nissan Frontier 3.3non s/c.great tone... hope that helps:bounce

Thanks guys. I took a look at a Dynomax Super Turbo at Advance Auto Parts tonight. This is the one that's not a straight through. The bad thing is that you never really know what it's going to sound like until you buy it and put it on. I spent way too much money on the Borla system, and am hesitant to spend much more. I guess I'll think about this for a while...

The super turbo also sounded nice on my 4.3L I had that to begin with. Then went with Flowmaster that was way too loud and nasty then to Dynomax UltraFLO.

And I am sure you could sell the Borla on ebay or something.

I had a Magnaflow on my Accord....for about a month. Even with an 18" resonator, it was way too loud, especially at freeway speeds. I now have a Vortec turbo muffler that is nearly silent at freeway speeds, but still has a nice growl when you get on it.

Dave-check to see if Thermal Research makes a system for your truck. They have some stealth systems that flow well and are not much louder than stock, but sound much better when you hit the gas...without waking the neighbors.

I had the day off today, so I went around looking for a muffler. I ended up buying one from a local muffler shop. The guy came out and listened to my Borla, then said a Flowmaster 50 series would probably be just as loud. They had a turbo style muffler that that he thought would be quieter, so I ended up getting that. The guy measured my pipes and sold me the muffler, adapter pipe, and clamps all for just over $30.

I brought it home, cut off the Borla, and put the turbo muffler on. It sounds a lot quieter at idle, and under acceleration, but it has a really loud drone at 2000 rpm -- louder than the Borla :( The drone is right at highway driving speed, so I'm sure it would drive me nuts. Actually, this $30 muffler has a nicer tone than the Borla. It's a nice deep rumble.

I guess the good news is that everything is just clamped on, so I can take it off and throw something else on there quickly. I couldn't find any shop in town that sold the Walker or Thermal Research. I guess I'll have to check mail order places. With all of these mufflers, I may have to open my own performance muffler shop by the time I'm through!

I had a flowmaster 70 on an Explorer that I got tired of and changed to a Gibson which was louder yet. I had the shop put in a resonator and it mellowed it right out. If you have the room under there it might be an option.
