Which Collinite is best....

Alrighty, I've been doing some research on collinite, and I'm wondering which of their products would be best for shine and durability. Also, do any of your top your SG with collinite?

I haven't much durability experience w/ 476s, but will say that you probably have never seen beading like insulator wax creates. I've read that 476s is more durable, but have never had problems with iw.

I think that the general consensus is that 476s is more durable but iw gives most users a more pleasing look.

there are a ton of posts on the site of 476s and iw, with more recommendations either.

I did a bit of reading around these forums and decided to go with #845IW. Haven't tried any of the other Collinite products but I'm very happy with this one. It's kind of like #16, quite a neutral wax that's great as a topper, but with a bit more reflectivity and definitely easier to use.

Last winter's protection scheme was: clean with AIO once, then 3x layers of SG topped with 3x layers of #476s and this combo lasted through a tough Western New York winter.

Multiple layers were applied solely to insure total coverage because I apply both products sparingly to make residue removal easier. When applying either product it's difficult to determine if you've got 100% coverage, especially on light colors, so multiple layers are a must.

#476s (or #855 ... same product in larger old-school can) is highly recommended. I've never used #845IW but I would assume it's as good as #476s.

No such thing as "best"...

Yeah, the best Collinite wax is whichever one you like.

Some have suggested that for topping things the paste might be lower on solvents than the 845/IW, but I dunno if anybody ever came to a firm conclusion.

My take:

The most durable: 476S

The most balanced: 845 IW

As most balanced I mean great durability, great looks and easy application.

I know this has been discussed, but I haven't found anything definitive (not that there would be): Has anyone topped 476 with IW or vice versa? Results? Experience? It has been said that the IW will not take the 476 off, and I think I am going to try it this week.

topping IW with 476S or vice versa is equal to 2X IW or 2X 476S.

Hey, I once LSP'd my own car a few years ago (waiting 24-hours between) with Blitz-Harly-McCall's-P21S-Soveran. What I got was longer lasting carnauba durability plus good coverage. The shine was not all that spectacular like I thought it would be.

I would go for it.

According to Collinite customer service, #476s & #915 are basically the same product in different containers and they use #476s or #855 on their personal cars.

Got mine online from www.thebestwax.com but there are many others like www.mactecllc.com (free shipping) and some CarQuest autoparts stores carry #845.

Google "collinite" or search through some of the numerous collinite threads here.

238, 885, 476 are the same. 915 is a bit different; contains fragrance and minor other things.

I got 885 & 845. Used to top both with both. Looks outstanding either way.

Alex has it pretty much right. If you need or want durability go with 476 or 885 (if you want a larger can) and the 845 for ease of application.

I bounce between both all the time.

yep - topped SG with 476 on metallic blue - definitely worth the effort. The SG didn't do much for me, but the 476 really helped.

Here's an interesting lick on the 'finding Collinite' idea and I'm not making this up:

The Collinite Fleetwax #885 for boats is the Marquis D' Elegance, #915 for cars.

West Marine is a huge marine supplier located over all of the USA and Canada.

The SKU for #885 is 4756839 and is available at West Marine stores and if they don't have it in stock, their supply warehouse has tons of it and/or it can be brought in.

Online also at westmarine.com - go there and enter the sku in the search box and you'll see it.

It's nearly 30 bucks for the 885 but the can is huge, about 8 lbs. (I'm joking a bit) but you'll have so much you'll hand it down to your grandkids, it'll last that long.

I used this same info at a local West Marine store here in my home town and the gal thought I was loopy. She stopped smirking when the sku number came up on her computer as 'Fleetwax' and she brought one in for me.

I know the reputation that the Collinite bosses don't even use 915 but I have it in my collection. Haven't tried it yet though. The winter driver is wearing 476 this winter.
