Where to find 5/6" counterwiehgts for PC 7424?

I believe I am using a 6" counterweight on my PC and I am using 7-7.5" pads. I want to change to 6.5 inch pads, but I'm not sure which backing plate I need or where to get one. Anyone have any ideas?

Don- Are you asking about the plate or the weight?

99.9% of the time I just used the 6" weight (the weights are related to applications using a single sheet of sandpaper, any detailing work with foam pads/product are gonna weigh a ton more than that anyhow) so I wouldn't even think about it.

7" pads on a PC? Gee, I'd never get anything done with that setup...

Backing plate preferences vary; IMO you oughta buy a few different ones and see what *you* prefer.

I believe you are confusing the counter weight and backing plate. If you want to use smaller pads you want a different backing plate. Any random orbit backing plate on ACC will work. May I suggest using 5.5" pads though as the machine simply works better with pads that size and smaller. So get a 5" backing plate. The added surface area of larger pads will make it harder for the machine to keep the pad spinning, which means lower performance.

I know the difference between the two, I've just heard it said that you could "tear up your machine by using the wrong counterweight ... smaller counterweights for smaller backing plates etc. (the things the pads attach to). It's been over 12 years since I originally bought my PC/backing plate and pads, so I'm WAY out of the loop when it comes to what's needed and since all my current pads are toast and of the larger variety, I know I need to step down to the 6.5. As for pad selection, I am off the charts lost. I started with the LC variable contact pads which worked well, now they don't seem to exist and the list of possible replacements is frightening

PS Thanks for the link on the backing plates

Ohhh OK I was confused haha. Like accumulator said, I wouldn't worry about the counter weight. Just go ahead and change the backing plate for whatever pad you want to use. As for pads, a lot of people seem to like the buff n shine pads, I recently picked up a bunch and they are pretty nice. Just gotta find something you like and stick with it. If you want more cut you can look into microfiber pads. The megs microfiber cutting discs are great. Lot of cut and finish quite well

Eh, I've run my PCs with the 6" counterweight with pads as small as 3". No problems from doing so.

Don- The harsh truth of the matter is that these days there are machines that are *so* much more effective that the older PCs are really obsolete. I don't retire equipment just because something !newer! !beter! comes along, but I *have* retired my PCs because the newer machines (e.g., the Griot's one, let alone my Flex 3401, let *alone* the pricey Rupes21) are simply that much better. Really. I don't even use my PCs with 3" pads for spot-correction any more, or to apply wax, or....anything.

If I could, I would include a new PC along with my wish-list, but the problem is convincing The Wife that I need a new machine when my current one is still functional.

Don- heh heh, OK...hey, it's easy for me to spend your money! At least you can pretty much sidestep the expense of a new counterweight.
