Where to conceal a radar detector display

2 questions.



First the History.

I am from Canada. As far as Radar is concerned, concealment is of prime prime prime importance. I am considering buying a Passport SRX. Other runner up includes the new Bel Pro Remote Plus RX75, the SR7 with ZR3, and the K40.



question 1

Where is the best place to hide the "radar-display"?



question 2

Do you know any very good places that would provide professional installations on a BMW 850 6 manual. I live close to Montreal. Vermont, NY State, are good. Or going down the highway 87 somewhere. I don't mind to travel to get a job done "great".

Well, if I were you, I wouldn't be using one in a country where they are not allowed. You can face big fines if they catch you with one, so why bother going against the law?
 
The whole country doesn't ban radar detectors!



They are legal in Alberta, Saskatchewan and BC.. Good thing I live in Alberta :P

there is truth to your saying it is a tough choice. However, there are other considerations: Insurance companies now are taking car driver's record and increase premium with infractions records. I can use it when I go to the States (often). It is a bib toss up.
 
thx doc. but this is just the radar display that is remote. The actual radar detector is in plain view. I could be wrong here but that is how I understand it.

In any case. Thank you so much for your interest in my radar woes.... truly.

AS it stand now I am considering ZR3 for laser, and Whistler for radar remote.
 
Cincinnati Microwave, manufacturer of Escort, can direct you to installers. I wouldn't go with anything else but one of their products.
 
OK, here's a link to the coolest radar/laser detector install I've seen. ITR Sport Once you get to the main page, click Modifications, then go to Projects, and click Concealed Valentine 1. I'd post the pictures myself, but Imagestation is screwed up right now. This guy with an Integra Type R replaced his dash clock with a Valentine 1 display. I thought he did a pretty good job. Hopefully this will help you with your endeavor. :up
 
EricZ. This is very ingeniously thought. I don't know how you found that out man...my compliment. It would need to be adapted for my car with other ideas since the clock is 1inch square, but it gives the bulk of the project as is.

I've discussed this pic before...but in short. No it is not obstructed by anything. I pick up radar before I can even see the cop, both front and back. Side is really only useful to locate the cop as your passing. No, I cannot use my sunroof, but I hate it anyways. It is the one that does not slide cleanly into the roof of the car. It sticks out like some sort of spoiler and shakes violently over 80mph. The good thing about this location is:



1) It's right by your hand to adjust volume, settings, and/or turn off/on

2) Speaker is next to your head so you can hear it over your music or engine

3) Impossible to see unless you get on your knees and look up at my ceiling (which a cop would never do)



In closing, I like my setup a lot. I've been pulled over before with it on and it would be going crazy when the cop walks up. I now simply just turn it off if I'm being pulled over. When off, the display in the dash looks all black. Hope this helped.





BTW: The main piece is hard-wired to my battery :D
 
I'm just wondering if the display could be hidden behind a vent in the dash (if you wouldn't mind losing the ventilation). If the louvers close completely, then you wouldn't have to worry about anyone seeing it when they come close.

Actually on the console that is the only place available to me. I am not sure if it would fit but that is a good thought. THe clock idea is very bright but in my BMW it only occcupies 1 inch square. I have an other alternative which would be where the car phone was before, There is a fair amount of room there, but it would be tucked under the arm rest. I would need voice radar to be suiteable with a remote speaker and a remote switch to turn it off. I am considering Whistler 3400 for that purpose. It has an excellent clear voice system, is very well rated, is VG2 and... it is not expensive. I would still need ZR3, or Lidatek, or Bel 905 for laser. Blinder gives no signal of jamming and is defenately out of consideration because of that.

For the least expensive and no moding solution I think I would go with the cordless Solo S2 mounted to the visor. Although it isn't concealed the profile is so small (1.16" H x 2.90" W) it wouldn't be noticable in passing, there is no cord and can be easily taken down and put in console for storage. $335 USD with the visor mount.



Not as elegant as a concealed mount but not nearly the cost of either.
 
I'm looking at the V1 site (https://store.valentine1.com/store/) and was wondering how the concealed display worked on the Valentine. Do you mount the detector anywhere you want, and then you hook up the concealer (I'm guessing it's just like a faceplate or something) with a wire or something to the detector?
