Where did all the business go?

After staying covered up for about 2 months in work I have encountered my first really slow week next week in recent months? Anyone else having this problem? I had 8 full details last week and the phone just didn't ring at all for new appointments. I am sure I can hustle and create some business but this is weird. Not to mention the rain that has killed us here and there.:nixweiss

I have a lot of regular weekly business but every once in a while, I won't get much else. It seems to coincide with the start of school, right after Christmas and when spring first begins-probably because of all the pollen in the air. In fact, last night's line of storms seems to have washed the rest of the pollen out of the air so I expect to get hammered the next few weeks.

After you have been in business for a few years, you will know the times of the year you will slow down for a week or two. I use those weeks to catch up on all the stuff I can't do when I am working 7 days a week.

Yeah, I agree as a small business owner there will always be times of question on why the phone isn't ringing. I've been here before and it will pick-up, I can't wait to get back to NC where I can count on having population and lots of thirtysomething with money in my favor in Raliegh or Charlotte. Chattanooga is a ball-breaker when it comes to detailing or small business, I mean for all the nice cars here people don't give a rat's a** about how their car looks.

Advertising, I have done it all and what works is a good referral program a few office complexes under your belt and some fleet detailing. Where they are this week, who knows?.

P.S. Thanks you for taking time to actually reply with words and by the way Scottwax I would love for you to post a picture of your wax arsenal.

I've had a substantial uptick in the last two weeks...

Must be seasonal, since I'm too busy to do any actual promotion :)

Hang in there!

Jim

I have noticed a slow down in business during the month of April over the past 4 years. Living in the southeast I have to blame most of it on the pollen season. It's hard to convince someone to clean their vehicle when 15 minutes later its green/yellow again.

Another thing I have considered is the affect of tax day (4/15) on business. Perhaps folks aren't spending as much when they are busy working on paying the feds??

Definitely a factor. I have a regular who owes the IRS $1200 so he just had his washed today instead of washed/polished/waxed like he had planned.

Whew! Don't come to Raleigh or Charlotte. Bad business! J/K It must be the pollen or just the season

Yup me too. Last month I was booked almost 2 weeks in advance every weekend. This month I'm struggling to book clients. We have had rain every weekend the last 3 weeks too. Things are looking up though as my weekend is booked.

Good luck.

ive given up on keeping the car clean till the pollen settles. Being that its black, i give it 1 to 5 minutes before its yellow again. Ive decided to work on saving for advertising in this time period because i know it is slow bc of pollen.

where's the business?? I caught this and everyother thread on page 2 since i have been soo buried that i havent been here!! My staff is up to 8 guys, and we have 5 marinas on contract with about 8 boats/week at one, 6/week at one, and 2 /week at the others. This is all on top of having cars being booked for the next couple weeks!!! All i can tell you is market yourself to the max. Spend alot of $$ on getting business, and you will make $$

How do you market yourself?

Well, as far as the marinas go, i took the time to draw up very nice color proposals with lots of pictures, and all the information that the marina could possibly need. We swept through every dock in town, and landed contracts with all of the service managers at the different yards. As far as cars go, I spent alot on business cards that are very nice and professional, and they get left everywhere that i could possibly pick up a client. I sponsor local automotive forums, clubs, and shows. That seems to ring in the guys who are fanatics about clean cars. I send high quality printed direct mail that is customized for each house (simple mail merge, and a good printer to print over the end product from the printshop), We will be going eiher radio or billboard this year, not sure what way i want o shoot, but something along those lines. All you need is alot of enthusiasm, and a group of really great people you can trust, and you will always get consistant quality from!

It also helps that Buffalo has quite a booming boating scene with all the waterways. There's still room to grow with the lower Niagara River/younstown area, and Lake Ontario/Wilson areas.
