Hello,

I was wondering, when should I throw away the clay bar?? The product description says that

"PolyClay does not dry out with age and does not decompose with repeated applications."

if it doesnt decompose or dry out... why would i ever replace it??

Thanks.

That depends. Are you planning to let it sit in your detailing cabinet, or use it? If you're going to just admire it on the shelf, it sounds like you could save it for a very long time. But I bet you plan to use it. :idea In that case, you'll discard it when it has encased a bunch of contaminants.

Personally, I've adopted BradB's approach. When I clay, I cut off thin slices from the bar, then I flatten the slice down into a little piece about 1/4"thick and the diameter of a silver dollar. I use that slice til it seems to have some grittiness, then I toss it. Other folks will talk about folding and kneading a bar to re-use it. But personally, I look at it this way: I'm cleaning and being steward to a car worth many thousands of dollars; so I'm not going to "push the envelope" to economize on a $10 clay bar.

I'm sure that other Autopians will weigh in on this when they wake up tomrrow.

Lynn is absolutely right. Get rid of the clay when whatever method you use fails to expose fresh clay. New clay is cheap for the results you get.

I got lucky shopping at one of my local Meguiars distributors last summer. They had one 200g bar of clay magic, in a cracked box for dirt cheap. I'm still using that bar (more than half left :D ), and I've done something like 6-7 clay jobs with it. I just pinch off a little chunk, flatten it out, and go to town. When I can't fold/knead a fresh spot OR I drop it OR I get some really nasty crud in it, I toss it and get a fresh piece. Scratching your paint with the contaminants inside the clay isn't cool. :angry

If you use it this way, and keep the remaining chunk/pieces wrapped up, it should last a long long time.
