When did you know?

When did you know that detailing would be your passion?

I have always loved cars. When I was a kid, I fell in love with Trans Ams and Vettes. Every car I owned had to be kept immaculate.... so I guess it was from the day I bought my first car!

Was there a specific event that kicked off your love for detailing?

I can remember the first time I picked up a date in my car. And I can remember her saying, "Nice car... it's so nice and clean!" Pretty much sealed the deal for me!:)

I got into detailing when I got my Silverado three years ago. It gonna be three years old in a couple months and it still looks brand new. Now I detail cars on the side for some extra cash.

So I think its going to be a big part of my life for the rest of my life.

I think that I first really got into it about eightteen years ago when I owned a Mustang LX 5.0. I remember I used to wash and hand wax it, and just loving the way that it looked in the sun.

Um... well its not my ONLY passion...*chuckle*
Letsee what can I remember, so long ago?

In the Seventies when I first started driving, I guess I wanted my "wheels" to look sharp, but I really didnt know much on how to go about it. When I was handed down a '65 Chevy wagon the paint was 10 yrs old and just about dead, I remember compounding it by hand with Dupont # 7, no mean feat as that thing was about as long as a football field! I did that b/c I wanted to restore the gloss, of course it didnt do a lot of good, and I wasnt aware of machine polishing or "final polishes" but that stuff helped some. Funny thing I have a half-brother that ran a detail shop in OKC, but I never caught "detailing fever" from him - BTW hes a painter now. I guess I have always enjoyed taking care of my stuff, but didnt go into extreme detailing

I guess purchasing my '96 RMW, the second newest car I ever owned. lol. Until I got that I did pretty good at keeping my transportation clean. But my other wagon an '87 Mercury is a rust-belt bucket now so I dont bother. The '96 was really clean when I got it, so I wanted to keep it nice so I got on to some Buick forums and then I found a link to CMA/PAC and the info there expanded my interest in finer points of detailing like how to properly wash your car, clay the finish, machine polishing etc. I have to say its more effort than I expected but fun...I think I have good products & tools now, and gaining knowledge & with practice I can get my vehicles looking as good as possible.

For me it was in the mid sixties, when those muscle cars were coming out of Detroit. But I really pick-it up in the very early seventies.

I began detailing Mercedes-Benz / BMW helping out at my Father?s dealership as well as his Jag collection back in the late 50's, he enters them into Concours d??l?gance events (detailing to another level) and as such I?m used to a large number of high-end new and used cars. The one thing I learned (and still have at least 98% left to learn, mind you) way back then still holds true today [ It?s the surface preparation that makes the difference, not the product].

I detailed my first car when I was fourteen (a mere five decades ago) it was a 1929 Bentley that belong to my Fathers friend Brigadier John Dix of Kensington, London. If, as they say, "God is in the details," then a 1929 Bentley is truly a religious experience. Using a Black and Decker Buffmaster polisher, which seemed so big and heavy at the time, the way the pro detailer's had taught me, I knew then that detailing would become a passion and my m?etier.

It has always been a relaxing past time for me and while at college I had a part-time business detailing classic vintage cars. From there to Concours d??l?gance entrant then judge, and then on to writing car care articles and How-to: instructions, then writing a series of books on my favourite subject.

I've been a car guy ever since I can remember. Detailing never really attracted me, but I always admired cars with nicely finished paint. I'd taken a shot at detailing at different points, only to have been met with disappointment, so I pretty much gave up on the idea.

Then, a few years ago, I decided to learn how to do it right. I found Autopia after a search of the web, read all the noob guides, searched some more and read everything I could find, ordered some products and went at it. My initial aim was to lay down a solid coat of protection and that's about it. Much to my surprise I found myself really enjoying the process. The results were more gratifying, too. Now I detail as a summer extension of the automotive hobby.

i always liked my cars clean ever since i bought my first car. a brand spankin new 72 opel manta... i waxed that car with turtle wax about 3 to 4 times a month. it had so much wax on it during the warmer months that i never had to wash it. a soft towel mad it look like i just detailed it... loved that car
