what's the minimum you need to do after a claying?

I've been reading reading reading and I'd like to try a hand at some detailing but I need to be honest with myself I'm not ready to jump in all hogwild yet (mostly because I don't think I'll ever have one lump of time long enough to do everything I want to).

But I am interested in trying the claying process. If I do this, what's the minimum next step I would need to do just so I don't leave the vehicle open to any damage.

I do have some ColorX in my garage. And I'd be doing this by hand.

If I don't have a solid lump of time, what can I come back and do days later w/o starting over from the claying process again?

After claying, the minimum you'd want to do is a wash and a wax.

The reason for the wash is to get the clay residue and the clay lube residue off, and the wax to protect the paint afterwards.

I'd also recommend using a cleaner wax, since you're not going to be doing any sort of swirl removal. It'll add some fillers and such to make your finish look better.

Mothers and Meguiars both make nice cleaner waxes.

There is also our all time fav, Klasse AIO which is a cleaner, and has a bit of sealant to boot! But no fillers though.

ColorX is a cleaner wax.

So your "minimum" would be:

Wash

Clay

Wash

ColorX

Per your question, you could clay and apply ColorX a few days apart, but I would wash again or S&W prior to ColorX.

thanks! I think that would be a good start for me to get acclimated to some of these procedures before I go to any next steps or a PC. What would the best applicator be for the ColorX by hand? Could I use MF cloths or do I need a sponge type applicator such like Sonus makes?

To apply ColorX, I would recommend either a terry wrapped foam applicator or MF wrapped foam applicator. They are usually rectangular.

Remove with quality MF towel.
