Whats the best off the counter swirl remover?

Hey, I've looked at these forums for a while and was wondering what's the best. Scratch X seems to suck and do nothing. I was thinking about eagle one nanowax or 3m swirl remover? any ideas? My car is always clean, but it is swirled :bawling:

Scratch-X is not a wipe on - wipe off product, you need to work it into the finish. Use a terry applicator and work a small area, maybe 6" x 6" until the product disappears - you don't need a lot of product, maybe the size of a nickel. Buff the area with a microfiber, inspect, and repeat if needed. You may need to go over the area three or four times, but it will work - don't give up.

I had a dark blue rental car while my car was in the shop and it was seriously swiled. It took about 15 minutes with a PC, polishing pad, and Meg's #9 to get 1/2 the trunk lid (about 18" x 30") swirl free. Don't ask why I was experimenting products and techniques on a rental car I was turning in the next day (my wife is slowly understanding, but I had to promise to not do the hood). Hand swirl removal is a slow go but will be quicker with a PC and even faster with a rotary.

You have two choices here. You can: a) *Remove* your swirls, or b) *Hide* your swirls. Most "Swirl Removers" (also called SMR's), are usually glazes that fill in the swirls so you just don't see them anymore, like the nanowax you were talking about. You can go this route, which looks great.....for a while, but will eventually come back, OR you can get rid of them completely by polishing the finish smooth.

You're going to get a lot of suggestions either way, but think about this question, and if you can decide whether you want a polish or a smr, you will narrow the suggestions down a bit.

Mazda 6's are so fricking sexy, especially in dark blue *drool*

As for your problem, I would just go the glaze route. on my own car I use a glaze topped by a carnauba. even that my car has swirling, it appears perfect. Yes, I personally know that the defects are still there, but noone else does. And I achieved this without grinding off clearcoat. sounds good to me!

Why hide them when you can remove them? Leave the glazes for the guys who don't know any better and get yourself a machine and a polish that can actually remove swirls. Removing swirls is not a job that I would suggest doing by hand. It is incredibly physically challenging to generate the speed and heat necessary to break down abrasives and effectively polish paint. Swirl removal is the job of a PC or rotary. If you are new to machine polishing then I would suggest you drop the $150 bucks it will take to get yourself a PC and some pads and go that route. Or you can just pay a detailer the $150 bucks and have him do it for you. Don't hide what you can remove.

Mothers PowerPolish has some polishing oils but it isn't loaded with oils like Megs#9

I love MPP but it is loaded with oils...try washing your pads out after use...you need a degreaser. But I think the oils are to buffer the abrasive and allow longer polishing time, rather than act as fillers - although it does have some filling ability.

As far as ScratchX goes, I think it works well, but you need to follow the advice Louie has given above. Your arm will fall off :chuckle: but it'll work well. Otherwise get a PC and some MPP.

Thanks for all the help guys. I went ahead and bought this paint glaze. I know i know, swirls are still there somewhat but I don't have the cash in my wallet to buy a rotary at this moment of time. Anyway here's my car after i cleaned it. I just used terry applicator pad and buffed it off with microfibers.

#7???

Search MOL. #7 was made by Meguiar's in the stone age. Does Barry Meguiar use #7 on his car??? Hell no. #7 is a dust magnet. #7 doesn't last very long. #7 is a b*tch to strip off (which you will need to do, because it doesn't last.

It might look fine now, but you will live to regret #7.

Take the advice given earlier, and next time use one of the many products suggested in the thread. Any of those products are superior to #7. In fact, even Meguiar's has tons of products that perform better than #7.

Peace.

Actually, #7 is a very good glaze - even if its really old; same vintage as #16 - especially on s/s paints. It is hard to use but 6Th_WaRRioR seems to have worked out how to use it. It looks really good. It has that wet-paint look only #7 can produce...maybe because it has actually wet the paint!

Warrior, if you left it glaze only, you need to top it with a quality carnauba or else the glaze will wash off in the first rain. :up

True, because it is a non-drying oil. It will just skin like a cooling pudding. Show car effect for the period of the show... means a few days.

Yes, #7 will hide those imperfections. But even NXT will hide them quite good and it will last significantly longer than #7.

Warrior, believe us, it is worth to eliminate those scratches!

Alright guys, that stuff was hard to take off. My arm was soooo tired, lol. Only wax i have is that Megs Cleaner Wax. I think I will borrow my friend's NXT and top it off with that for now. Ill go all out trying to get rid of those swirls and scratches when it gets a lil warmer, I froze my *** off yesterday. I might ask for suggestions then, probably will. 'Til then, thanks for all the help guys.

I personally would not go OTC for swirl removal. I've just never thought OTC products were good in this area. You can find DACP but it's performance is mediocre and it is quite fussy to use.

Can you mail order and wait a week? There might be some bundles available from the vendors as well so you might be able to get a deal. Use a coupon also.

Lee, DACP is probably finicky, but stating that it is mediocre is a bit too strong... And besides, have you tried Mothers Power Polish?

The 1Z consumer line is common OTC here, and they are producing great results!

That's been my experience. SSR2.5 performs better and is much easier to work with imho. 1Z is very good wrt polishing but its not OTC here.

You need to follow up with a wax or sealant over the #7... My choice would be Pinicle Souveran wax. Or UPP sealant. JMHO
