What underbody *winterizing* do you guys do

Just curious.....

I did a short stint in Canada and places like Rustcheck & Krown were popular.

Other than the typical durable waxes we put on out car, just curious if you guys treat your own underbodys like Wurth underbody - or the Amsoil HD Metal Protector.

I just spray the underbody off at least once a week. I also painted most of my underbody so it should be ok.

It has some Stoners Shine on it right now, but that probably wouldnt last to long in the winter.

I spray down my engine compartment, door jambs, wheelwells and what I can reach under the car with WD-40 after my last prewinter detail and the upper areas/wheelwells again midwinter. The salt/dirt/crud seems to absorb and hold the WD-40 in the small crack and seams. So far, none of the cars I have 'treated' this way have shown any signs of rust in those areas.

I buy the WD-40 in the gallon-sized container at the hardware store and use a standard 32oz spray bottle to apply it.

**edited to add** Yes it stinks to high heaven for a while, but I'd rather have a short term stink, than permanent rust.

If you have to daily drive it during the winter OR the summer. Screw the undercarriage. The undercarriage will only be touched on car show or garage queens. THATS IT!

hose it off evertime you was the car and it'll look better than 99% of the cars out there. my dads a mechanic and i work in his shop for a while, so i've been under alot of cars. if you like your mechanic hose it off, and he'll like you.:grinno:

:buffing:

I go to the coin opp places once a week or so just to spray the salt and grime off it during the winter and until there's at least one good rain in the spring to wash the salt off the road.

That about sums it up... :)

I wish my 9 year old VW had that!

I disagree. I detail the underbody on my Jeep then run it through a mud hole a month later.. Its a never ending process. :grinno:

I took care of everything on my wife's Cherokee EXCEPT the undercarriage...last spring I had to have large pieces of sheet metal welded in where the floor used to be, everything that I kept upp on is still in great shape.

I do the same when Im at the shop and we use a heated pressure washer to take off all the grime. Love how it looks and you can see what parts are leaking. But I don't wax or seal . I think it's a waste of time to do it.

Nah, not on *my* vehicles :D Even the minivan gets its undercarriage cleaned properly at every wash, summer or winter. Just keeping everything nice and clean goes a very long way towards keeping the undercarriage in good shape, and it makes it easy to spot maintenance needs before they get serious. Just *looking* at everything down there every week is beneficial IMO.

If I'm gonna really *prep* an undercarriage I do it once with stuff like AutoInt Rust Inhibitor and/or Eastwood's Heavy Duty Anti Rust. I treat electrical connections and some other things I want *lightly* protected with the Amsoil (which cures clean and dry, at least for a product like that). Then I just do minor touchups from then on out.

The Wurth Body Protection is also good stuff, and I use that on German cars as it most closely matches the factory paraffin-based stuff (the stuff that some people erroneously call "cosmoline").

But the MPV's undercarriage has held up surprisingly well with no treatment at all, just regular, thorough washes. Its suspension pieces do have a little surface rust in places, but hey, it's been the family beater through five Ohio Winters. And the rust it does have could be easily arrested, which I just might do one of these days. A little work with some Eastwood products and it'd be good as new :D
