This I'm posting again since the thread it was in originally was lost.
Long story short- while attempting to repair some horrid stone chips on my black 2000 audi a6 hood, the combined effects of 2500 wet sanding, some turtle wax red compound (never us that stuff on clear coat!!) and finally what broke through was me gently rubbing by hand using 3m fine cut rubbing compound. On top of all that, my car had been buffed by the dealer in that area..
Many people,have only seen clear coat damage photographs such as the ones on this page-autoint
Rubbing through the clear is not always as obvious..
In this shot, the rub-through is near the reflection of my upper index finger.. not visible in this photo.. just to let you know what you are looking for.
Here, you can see it in the circle I put in via software.. near my still unfixed stone damage..
To get this close, I had to go into macro mode and put some tape on the hood so the camera would have something to focus on..
The digital artifacts are worse than the rub from this angle- and it cannot be seen here- but look at all those other blemishes! ewww!
It is visible in this photo- between the upper point of the tape and the stone craters is the iceland shaped rub- note how my fingerprint to the right of the tape is more visible..
Here is that last one again, this time with the saturation and contrast punched up all the way and then some via software--
This is how the rub looks to me when I think about it..
If you ever do this, remember that further rubbing will not remove it- and the color coat is probably thinner than the clear was- so just try never to do this. Repainting the panel is the only right way to fix.
Till then, I'm just piling on the glaze and wax and trying not to look for it.
