What products and technique do you use to cut fast?

I was wondering what method others use when they need to remove serious defects or sanding scratches. I just finished a moster job and was wondering if maybe I could have done it faster - I had a black Cadillac (had been repainted) than had alot of serious scratches and a few panels with orange peel that I wet-sanded with 1500. Initially I thought I'd start with Meguiars Heavy Cut using using a 6.5" lambswool/wool pad at about 1,500 RPMs, but this wasn't getting the job done. I then went to a double-sided 9+" wool pad that I borrowed and used Meguiars' Diamond Cut at 2,500+ RPMs - this got the job done but leaft very heavy swirrel marks. Second I used IP with a medium 6.5" foam pad at around 2.500 RPMs. I finished with a PC, finishing pad, and OPP at a speed of 6.

In the end I had a vehicle and free of swirrel and halogram marks but it took me around 12 hours before the last coat of Jett went on - I wish I had "before and afters" to post.

Please share your system, as I'm looking for ways to save time for the next time I have to sand somebody's vehicle down.

Holy cow...a wool pad with Diamond Cut @ 2500RPM?

For heavy cutting, I just use a yellow/orange pad with SSR3 via rotary @ 1500RPM.

Optimum Compound with a 4" yellow pad @ speed 6. Still takes fricking forever to remove stuff (let alone I can't remove bad defects off of VW paint). I need a rotary *cry*

Next time I will go from 1500 paper to 3000. I think I would have been compounding all day had I not turned up the heat. Goint to 3000 probably would have seved me a couple hours in buffing time - I hope.

I sure was impressed with how well Menzerna IP worked under high RPMs! Next time maybe I'll try PowerGloss after 3000 paper and see how that works (I have never used PowerGloss before).

Thanks

Optimum's new Hyper Compound is supposed to be very aggressive yet finish out nice with little dusting. I have a bottle, just haven't tried it yet.

Acrylic Jett.

ScottWax, I ordered some Hypercompound over a week ago (not here yet) so I'll be giving it a try as well.

Yeah, go to the 3K paper and use Meguiar's Unigrit stuff. The sanding marks come out very easily, even without a rotary, even on hard paint. You could even use 2-2.5K but it'll take a little more work. There's a huge difference between 1500 and the finer stuff.

FWIW, using 2-3K Unigrit, I've never needed wool, never needed anything harsher than 3M PI-III RC. That's on Spies-Hecker paint too.
