I would assume the softer pad would be ideal so that you can hit the surface of the car more evenly.

Green Propel or Sonus pad seems to be a very good pad for general use on finishes with slight to moderate imperfections, and a orange cutting pad for moderate to severe imperfections. I have not experienced this myself, but it seems to be the go- to pads for most with a rotary. If the sun would come out, I could try and testify to this b/c I plan on using the exact combination real soon
