I am going to embark on buffing my car but the products i have just are no longer doing the job effectively. I am looking to replace my whole lineup of pads and compound. I see alot of opinions on products out there but cant decide which different products to use for each step and what pads to use so i came here looking for some help. This car I'm doing is black with some moderate paint damage and scratches from improper washing over the years (not from me I just bought the car) so I am hoping I can finally decide which products to get. I currently have a dewalt rotary buffer but am thinking of getting a cheapo harbor freight DA one just to have around. Thanks for any and all posts

What kind of car do you have?

I have always been a Meguiars guy personally but I have grown fond of Menzerna and Blackfire (though from my understanding Menzera makes Blackfire stuff.)

Meguiars:
M105
M101

Polishes
M205
M09
M07

Menzerna:
FG400
PF2500
SF4000
SF4500

All have their own place IMO!

Anything 3-4 years young (all I work on) I can get pretty much perfect with a compliment of pads and Meg's 205, FG400 and SF4500. For Sealants, BF WD and Crystal Seal.

For swirl removal,I use Megs D300 applied with their MF cutting and finishing pads. For sealants,I use BFWD, or Jetseal 109 and for wax I use Collinite #845.

I have Blackfire Crystal Seal on my rims and have been very impressed with it and I will probably be using it more and more often.

I really enjoy CG V series polishes. Water based, long work time and zero dusting. I'm a big Menzerna fan but they tend to dust quite a bit and they are $$$. Everyone swears by 105 & 205. They do work really well. If you want you can pick up sample pack of all 4 CG V series for $20 straight from CG. You don't have to shell out $20+ for a bottle of polish that you don't care for

thanks guys this car i plan on doing is a black 1988 lotus esprit turbo. I doubt it has been repainted but i believe they used clear on these cars from the factory but its probably nothing like todays clears. the last thing i want is burns or swirl marks so which pads would be "safe" to use. The paint isnt that bad just a few marks and light scratches that are from dirty sponges/towels being used

All I have used is Meg's 105 and 205, and I have turned out great results. These are two products that people tend to start off with. Also, save yourself the trouble and go with some Lake Country Hydrotech pads. These three pads keep it super simple with a cutting, polishing, and finishing pad.

But since my confidence has grown I have really wanted to get more into some Menzerna polishes. Especially their PO85RD, but it's pretty pricey.... I also love the idea of Chemical Guys optical polishes with zero dust.

i tend to go with meguiars 105 or d300 for correction and use menzerna for polishing and finishing. then its on to bfwd for sealing topped with crystal seal. works very well on my vehicles.

If its really bad and mean HAMMERED OMG BAD, I start with fg400 or M101. But 85% of the time I have no problems getting the Job done with BF SRC Compound, BF SRC Finishing Polish. And actually about 90% of the 85% I can make a car look really good with BF SRC Finishing polish(king one step in my books.) How ever going for perfect you probably need to start with something more aggressive. Also 1988 I'd almost bet the car is not cleared. Probably single stage paint. Awesome car BTW! I've loved those cars since I saw one in pretty woman when I was 7.

Mr. Torbati, the fact you use a rotary with these polishes makes them more effective, rather than 85% of us that use DA's and will need to start with an aggressive compound for moderate/heavy defects.

Thanks for more responses and I'm thinking of the megs 101, BF SRC Compound, BF SRC Finishing Polish. I am not sure if i want to use a my current 3M dual sided wool pad on this car cause ive gotten good results but it swirls like crazy. Id like to get all new pads for this car cause i want to make it look as glossy as possible and stand out more than it already does.

If you need any tips with using these I've got a ton of cars under my belt with with the BF polishes, and I've m101 a time or 2;) So feel free ask!

Any tips would be welcome! Please just PM me cause I'm confident in my abilities but maybe a tip or two could save me from a burn.

I've had success with Menz FG400 / 2500 / 4000. On the rare occassion something is really nasty, than M101. Generally speaking, 2500 as a one step with a white hybrid pad on a Flex does a super job. I've also tried and liked WG TSR and their fine machine polish WG Finishing Glaze (don't be mislead by the name, it's really a fine polish) - excellent as well.
