What is the best "cleaner" prep?

I am getting ready to strip off all the sealant and wax I currently have of my car and start over with the Menzerna kit IP, FP, FTG, and FMJ.



My question is, what is the best thing to use to get that off the paint before I start? I know that the polish will take a lot of that off, but I would like to get the polish to work directly on the paint and not have to go through all the wax, etc...



What do you all suggest?:nixweiss

Agreed, most likely a 70:30 mix alcohol to water. YOu could probably get away with 50:50. DO a search for "alcohol" and you should find what you are looking for!

In terms of products that remove LSPs for the initial removal prior to polishing, I would say a prep solvent perhaps even followed by the IPA mix ( to ensure any residue that might be left behind by the prep solvent is gone) is the "best" prep. I dab my fingers in the IPA mix, dry them and then feel the paint to try to gain a sense if there's any more LSP left on the paint.
 
I've used Gliptone's Pro-Buff Paint Cleanser with a polish right after in the past, and have had excellent results. The gliptone will take ALL of your lsp and then some off. As a stand alone product that thoroughly cleans, I would have to recommend Gliptone.



If you wanted a system that cleans and polishes, however, then you could research some other products that have a paintwork cleanser and a separate polish as a prep for an lsp, such as Sonus' SFX system.

I would highly recommend the alcohol/water mix. Don't get me wrong, I really, really like GEPC. It leaves a great ready-to-wax finish but it also leaves a moderate amount of oils behind --> not exactly what you want. If you don't like to use the alcohol/water mix, I recommend Klasse AIO. Excellent chemical cleaner that will surely strip any sealants/wax (more so that GEPC). Of course even AIO leaves some acrylic protection behind, but IP will easily remove this and get right to the paint.

Yes, need to determine if you want any kind of residue, oil, sealant left behind or truly "naked paint".
 
I owuld like to have truly "naked paint" as you say... I just want to start off very clean, and work from there. I plan on washing it with a "cleanser" and the FP, FTG, and FMJ
 
Unfortunately, most of the popular "cleansers" leave some type of residue (oil, protection, etc.). Not to bring in another product line, but it's almost the same reason why several zaino users have been itching for the upcoming zaino cleanser. The following recommendation might bring some cringes, but you could *Dawn* your car. Would remove most of your prior LSP's (I still don't think it removes all prior products, but that's just my opinion). Other than that, I am out of ideas for you.

Yes, same here. In my experience, Dawn didn't really do that great a job of stripping LSPs :nixweiss, I recall even something as light as P21S still apparently partially intact. I prefer to work in sections any how. After washing the whole car, picking the panel or section I'm going to polish, remove the LSP, then start the polishing procedure using the IPA mix along the way to monitor the progress of my defect removal.
 
Regular ISA out of the bottle is 70% isopropanol, standard. Since ISA doesnt hurt the paint anyway, why not just use it right out of the bottle ? Also I wonder if Denatured alcohol would work too. ? I might test it on a car I am junking.
 
I have brought this up in prevous threads, but I will say it again. Hi-Temp's body shop line, Akyra, makes a product called Klean. It is designed specifically to remove all sealants, silicones, etc. You basically cut it 50/50 with water and wash the car with it. It really suds up nicely. Let it sit a few minutes and rinse it off, voila.
