The Old Grey Whistle Test
Be patient when travelling through the learning curves; as some are steeper than others
Diagnosis is the key, not guess work.
Before using a product, wither it be a cleaner or an abrasive polish a detailer needs to know the material they are working on, what they are trying to remove and wither the product chosen is compatible with the material and will not damage it.
It cannot be emphasized enough ‘Apply products very sparingly’ Ease of product removal is inversely proportional to the amount used
Always choose the least intrusive product first, it is preferable to polish 2-3 times to restore the paint film surface than to use an unnecessarily abrasive machine polish / foam pad combination. There is only a finite amount of ultra violet (UV) protection available in the vehicles clear coat, removing too much (0.3 Mil (7.5 µm) will cause the paint system to fail, which means it will need to be repainted, which is an expensive process. Proper washing and paint surface drying techniques are the best way to avoid the need for constant polishing.
The same rule applies to cleaning products.
Build up as much detailing knowledge as possible, learn the correct application methods and pick your products wisely.
It is important to read and understand the MSDS, process specification, and technical data sheet before working with strong acids or high alkaline products. These chemicals will remove most any soil; but at what cost, nothing worse than brand new wheels that someone used an acid (or a strong alkaline) cleaner on and now they have blotches where the cleaner has compromised the finish, worse than cosmetics it may cause aluminum embrittlement, causing a structural failure when subjected to road shock, i.e. going over a pot-hole.
Become educated on what different materials are used in vehicles and how to tell the differences between them. Always select a chemical / cleaner that are biodegradable, environmentally friendly and safe to use by observing any precautions recommended so that they won’t harm you, your vehicle or the environment
Before using a cleaning product a detailer needs to know the material they are working on, what they are trying to remove and wither the product chosen is compatible with the material and will not damage it. After checking the pH value of the cleaner, always carry out pre-test spot procedures before using a cleaning product
