The social media (like Facebook) is just loaded with click bait or click teasers...vague headers with some supposed heart warming story as a teaser to invite you to an ad laded web site where the navigation arrows are intentionally misleading to click on the wrong features. Welcome to the new social world where interpersonal communication is loaded with advertising.

And if you notice, we see reruns where a video is repeated every few months hoping fishing for more clicks (revenue).

Happy New Year!

I just finished reading a great book last night on technology, the brain, science and our attention. It was a great story that gave modern factual scientific data behind a narrative tragic story. All of this technology is so new and growing at an unprecedented rate, and its being engineered to play with some of our most basic attention instincts. Scientists are just now starting to realize how it's affecting society. I do hope the way the majority of people are currently using social media and technology is just a passing fad.

I was at a friends house in Miami this weekend and we were all having a great time in the living room. I remember thinking everyone was so engaged in the conversation for so long and it seemed strange (sadly). I looked around and realized there wasn't a TV in the living room (her roommate had just moved out). It was nice.

Hopefully just advertising--I know someone who got a really bad virus shortly after playing some "name the state capitols" game from Facebook.

Yeah, but was everyone constantly looking down at their phone/tablet? I'm guessing the book you read was the basis for an article I saw a couple of years ago suggesting that the way things are today effectively causes re-wiring of your brain, shortening our attention span.

Maybe a little outdated, but an old book sort-of presaged some of what we're talking about Future Shock - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Yep. Unfortunately they were constantly checking their phones. Remember back in the day when you wanted to call a girl, you had to muster up the courage to call her house? Because there was a 90% chance her parents would answer? :) Kids these days don't get to experience that!

Yes, the book revolved around the first legal case in Utah that dealt with "texting and driving" and has plenty of scientific evidence that shows how it all effects our brains.

What I've noticed with Facebook, LinkedIn and Google they interact with each other. Example is I connected with several business contacts on LinkedIn and within that week FB is suggesting them as possible people I know and would like to become friends. There is zero connection in most all cases with my online business connections and social media friends.

Google tracks you like a stalker online. Then posts ad's in both of the above mentioned

If you just browse amazon. you will see ads for most anything you looked at on facebook and other web sites that have cookie sensitive advertising.

Then there is all the polls.

Two suggestions.

1. Set your browser to : Tell Websites I Do Not Want To Be Tracked
2. Use a router that permits 3rd party firmware and use an adblock script. I use Advanced Tomato Firmware on an
Asus RT-AC68R router.

It won't block out 100% of invaders but you will definitely notice a difference.

The nice feature of the 3rd party firmware is it logs the attempted intruders. Once you have their isp, you can copy
and paste the isp in the "Block ISP" feautre of the router.

Whether you are here (which gathers info about your online habits), facebook, twitter, or even emails, good housekeeping is
important.
