I searched already. :D

What products do you recommend to get it in shape? Owner will pay for products. (boat belongs to the owner of the Highlander/Silverado)

Thanks for your help!

Rotary, wool pads, and a good gel coat compound and lots and lots and lots of time.

thanks BlackRegal - I am getting a rotary next month, but what is a "good" gel coat compound that you could recommend?

Maybe I will just take Patrick's advise and run :D

I have found that with my boats...if I don't tell them they are not cars...I can use the same products...shhhh!!

Gel coats are softer..so using a mild compound to begin with is a good place to start. Maybe with a wool finishing pad...then if that is not aggressive enough move up to the cutting pad...then if necessary a stronger compound...probably not though.

If the gel coat is in good condtion by the time you are done polishing and waxing the shine should last for months...if however it only lasts a few weeks...then the gel coat has "opened up" and then your looking at products like "Vertiglas" that are intensive to apply and need to be re-applied about once a year. Or....new paint.

Bayliner bashing may be in vogue, but is hardly relevant.

It is an entry level boat that serves a specific place in the market. All this junk about Bayliners being so bad...is just that...junk.

One doest buy a Ford Taurus and then compare it to a Mercedes.

But the guy in the Ford gets there just the same.

Mr. Chemist, I apologize if my sense of humor offended you and I do agree that bayliners do allow those who normally could not get into boating the ability to do so however as a licensed captain with just a couple of miles under my keel I can say that I would not trust a bayliner beyond site of land (especially with Force engines).

Yuke, force engines:nono Tell him to get a pair of Merc Saltwater 250's. Nice boat motor's, but kinda pricey. Have a 250 on our 16' and it flys:)

Ok, on to other things.

Protect All, Inc.

Protect All Does It All!

Thats what person recommended to me on this site. Don't know about gel coats though.

I'm with you on the Force engines...not very reliable...but I will still beg to differ on Bayliners...to say that you would not leave sight of land in ANY Bay...is a bit of a wide stroke.

The boat in this thread is clearly not suited for leaving sight of land...but as a coastal cruiser on a calm day....for a bit of fishing...I'd do it.

Just got back from 3 days on Catlina Island.....

I did a 19.5' boat last summer in similar condition using the complete line of 3M PI-III liquid abrasives. I completed the project using the PC and various pads which took me just over 16 hours. I started late one day and was rained out on another. So speaking from experience I would recommend using a rotary with wool or heavy cut foam and various compounds.

How many long is the boat?

Eric

Moved to Professional Detailers.

I was always under the impression that the gel coat (or something on fiberglass....) was harder, not softer? And that was why most boat products you see are a lot more aggressive than for autos. This is wrong?

I think that boat might be easy.

Really.

I've had tremendous success with simply Klasse AIO applied with a PC and a medium foam polishing pad. To me, that's the place to start.

I did a horse trailer (gelcoat) last weekend (yeah, that was fun!) The AIO does it; makes the term 'all-in-one' valid.

At the least, it is great starting point...

Softer and thicker. The oxidation can go quite deep into the coating. As with any polishing job...using the least invasive therapy to do the job is always best.

That gel needs some help, start with some 3M Superduty Compound with a wool pad and a rotary if you have it (about 1200 rpms is ideal) you can also use diamond cut if you have that laying around. If you work it until its dry and reduce pressure you'll be able to get away with that on the white, on the blue you'll probably need 2 passes of superduty and a lesser polish with a foam pad, if you really want to make the boat shine use the polish on the whole thing. Then follow up with some wax, naturally. I work at a boat dealership as a boat detailer (among other things) and I have brought back boats in MUCH worse condition than that. Expect 4 to 6 hours for that job. Good luck,

Chris

Oh ya The rust stain's on the transom can be taken care of with a product called On-Off a really nasty acid cleaner, if you can find it.

I'd say about the same size. What did you charge - may I ask?

thanks for your help.

Thanks Chris for all the info. What does one charge for something like that? A rotary will be available but don't have any of the compounds you suggested. I do have dacp but I can get 3m easy.
