What car wash shampoo to use on a fresh paint?

Some stupid ditz rear-ended my BMW a few weeks ago, and I just got it back from the body shop last week. The rear bumper was the only part of the car that was repainted (replaced, actually).

So, now I'm wondering - what kind of car wash shampoo should I use to wash the car, now that I have to be careful about letting the bumper cure properly? I assume I should stay from Zaino Z-7 (which I've always used in the past) because it contains some of the same polymer sealants/waxes/whatevers that are in Z-2 and Z-5, and I as I understand it putting any kind of a wax/sealant on fresh paint is a no-no.

I'm looking for something that I can buy in a retail store. Any recommendations?

nxt, gold class, and eagle one are the only OTC soaps i'd use.

But are you sure that they don't contain any kind of wax/sealant agent?

I'm worried because pretty much all the soaps say "Leaves a wetter, deeper, [whatever]-er finish." How could that be, if they don't contain some kind of sealant?

I believe it is silicone oil in the shampoo that leaves a "wetter, deeper, blah, blah" finish. I don't know if silicone is an issue on paint that is curing.

Meguiar's #00 Hi-Tech Wash is the only oil-free product I know of.

I've used these on fresh paint many, many times with no problems at all: Griot's, Meg's #62, Meg's #00. Dunno about any others, but these are safe.

Huh, so I just called the body shop and they said that they had baked the paint and it was already cured. I guess they could do that because the bumper was painted away from the rest of the car. They said I could wax the bumper immediately.

So, I should have no problems with Zaino, then. Thanks for the info anyway!

I'd still play it safe for the first month or two. My guy bakes it too, and I wait three months.

Hmm, okay...but can I buy Meguiars #00 in a retail store, like Autozone, Pep Boys, Wal-Mart, etc?

I don't have time to have something shipped.

No, you'll have to check a local Meguiar's distributor. Check your phone book. If you have a NAPA, you may find it there too.

If not, ask the body shop who did the work and see what they recommend.

Why would shampoo make any difference. Most of the shampoos dicussed here are not super strong, which could attack the soft paint and therefore I cannot think of why product X would be safe whereas product Y is not

he's just worried how most soaps leave behind oils and stuff that enhance the gloss of the paint. The oils might interfere with the new paint outgassing.

I believe the #00 claims to be "body shop safe".

My local PepBoi does sell #00. I also buy it at my local body shop supply store and they carry or can order any of the Meg's product except for the consumer (base) products.

I think I've seen it at Autozone but most of them have closed their doors so I am not confident you will find it there.

HTH.

you can use the consumer line (shampoo, even polish)just as long as you dont wax your car if it has been repainted

Hi, folks. I apologize for bring back an old thread, but for whatever reason I'm unable to start a new one.

My car is going in the body shop tomorrow and when I get it back its passenger side will be repainted. I've searched the forum and came up with a tentative product list. I plant to order 12oz sizes from autodetailingsolutions.com:

#5

#80

#81

Not knowing which would work best for me, I thought that I'd try several products just for the fun of it. I'm not sure, however, which wash to use. Normally, I use DG wash, but I'm open to a better option. As long as I'm ordering, would Hyper-Wash, Shampoo Plus, or Super Soap be a better choice for fresh paint?

IMO the #5 and #81 are just too similar..I'd stick with the #5.

I dunno about those shampoos, but if you're ordering Meg's stuff I'd just get the #62 or #00.
