Water spots are the mineral deposits that remain behind after the liquid carrier (water) dries up. The harder the water the higher the concentration of minerals in the water and the worse the water spots.

When my dad built his house he put two hose bibs at the front of the garage. One is hard water for watering the plants or washing down the driveway. The other is soft water for washing cars. Really soft water will dry without spotting. The soft water isn't used so that you don't have to dry the car but rather for those little residual drips that continue to drip from mirrors and tail lights after you're finished drying.

Scary imagery there. These are great reasons to make sure you don't allow water to dry on your paint (or rather, your protective wax coatings). Try QDing your car right after you use your primary drying method (cotton, absorber, MT). Doing this while the to-be waterspots are still damp helps a great deal.

Water hardness is caused by dissolved calcium and magnesium salts which occur naturally in all water. The higher the concentration of these minerals, the harder your water. When present, these minerals react with soap and reduce suds. Water with a low concentration of calcium and magnesium is called soft water. Water hardness can vary across cities depending on the mix of local groundwater and imported water. Some cities blend local and imported water which varies throughout the year, so water hardness also varies throughout the year.
