What am I doing wrong? Oxidized bumper (91 Miata)

Rev

Finally a sunny weekend and just helped the gf detail the Miata... check out the difference!

Can anyone suggest a better product for the bumper's oxidation btw? Tried ColorX and it did help...but looking for a closer match to the rest of the paint...

For this detailing sessions I used:

- Mother's Claybar

- Meguiar's Color X (oxidation... still quite a bit on front bumper? Seems common on these cars...)

- Meguiar's Polish / Wax

Before (oxidation obvious on bumper/mirrors)

Can anyone give me some tips on how to match the bumper with the rest of the car? Can't find Klass All-In-One locally... is it worth ordering?

Thanks so much!

Yeah : (

Is it time to invest in a Porter Cable? Which model# is it again? 3532 or something?

Right now I just have a really bad Simonize Orbital Buffer with rechargeable battery pack... not the A/C powered PC that one of my friends use.

Would you both apply the wax/remove it with the PC?

I would definitely suggest purchasing a PC but it's nothing you can't by hand. I will say though that removing that oxidation by hand will take quite a bit of elbow grease and a lot of your time.

Regarding your wax question, it's really a personal preference on how you want to apply your wax. Recently I have been using OCW a lot and all I do with that is spray it on and wipe it off.

If the nose fairing is a differernt material than the hood you might not be able to match the paint shine exactly.....

btw....you did an excellent job by hand.....:xyxthumbs

Try a PC next time and see if that can improve things.....Good luck..... :waxing:

Thanks Denzil and Dave!

Which PC should I buy? The one on Autopia.org?

Does it come with an applicator pad + buffing pad? Since its just the first detailing session after the purchase a few weeks ago I'm hoping things will be better for this 90's jellybean sports car from now on.

The previous owner didn't really care much for the car's paint... it was wiped down from time to time with a crummy wet clothe on the floor *eeek

Porter Cable Car Polisher Kit - 7424 Polisher, Foam Pads, Bonnets

That is the package i started with a few years ago. It was a really nice kit to start with. The pads were big enough where a total newbie like myself couldnt do much damage to the paint but still did their job.

There are a lot of kits out there, I just wanted to show you which one i got started on. After you get comfortable with the ~6.5" pads, you can step up (down?) to the smaller 4 and 5" pads.

By the way, car looks great! especially by hand.

Nice work :xyxthumbs

Well, personally I purchased my PC from Coastal Tool which comes with the 6" counterweight.

As far as pads go, there are tons all over the internet. They range from Lake Country, Edge, Propel and others. Pads are more or less the same and it's up to you with which set you want to go with. I purchased my pads from Patrick at Excel Detail. In addition, 4" pads are normally used for troublesome areas on your paint that need more correction.

It's difficult to match the nose exactly - I detailed a red 1995 Miata a while back, and even after OP/rotary/orange and PO85RD/rotary/black the nose didn't look as good as the rest of the paint.

If you get a PC, give it a shot with a white pad and Meguiars' #80. #80 really is a miracle worker on those old SS paints - I wish I had had some when I detailed the '95. Consider using Meguiars #80, Meguiars #7, and Meguiars #26 (or Collinite 845) - she looks good now but you'll be absolutely blown away by the difference a PC and the right products make.

Hey mightytimmah:

I'm glad someone who detailed a NA Miata knows what I mean... these cars seem to have a thinner layer of paint on the nose or something!!?

Good suggestion on the Meguiar numbers... will check those out. I've seen some pad color references... is there a standard? Quick search on ebay show that white PC pads are some sort of polishing ones... is that right?
