wetsanding part 2 ...rock chips

here is my first attempt at filling in rock chips and then wetsanding. i found that the process itself is very simple...nothing to be afraid of...but it's very difficult to get it to match well. the metallic flake in the paint made it hard to match...with the touch-up paint (duplicolor) appearing darker in most of the areas done. it seems like the flake itself clumps together in some spots. a few of the areas i did turned out nearly perfect...after one pass with the PC i had difficulty finding them again.

before/during/after of one area:

process was:

--clean area with IPA

--apply duplicolor paint w/ artist brush...~6-8 layers used over the period of 24 hours

--wait another day to cure

--wetsand w/ meg's unigrit 2000/3000

--polish w/ PC, 4" orange pad, and OHC...this went to an LSP finish! :)

i got lazy at the end and only used 2000 grit paper...had to hit it 2x w/ the OHC to remove the marring, but it went away easy enough w/ the 4" pad. :)

overall i'm very pleased, especially for doing this the first time. it seems like the areas that matched much better had less touch-up paint on them and the paint extended slightly outside the border of the chip...this helped to "feather" it in and hide the border. i did a total of 8-10 chips, but didn't take pics of them all. only about 100 more to go!

i did this once on my old car. I *think* the lack of a clearcoat layer might contribute to why it doesnt match that well. At least thats my theory. I didn't use a clearcoat touchup layer either and my fill-ins don't match that well either.
