Wetsanding Orange Peel

I have some horrible orange peel on my fender and just happen to have an unusable fender with a similar paint job in my garage.



I bought some 1000 and 1500 grit wet/dry paper and used some water with soap mixed in it.



I used the 1000 for a few minutes and then the 1500.



After I used my purple foamed wool pad with meguiars #105.



After a few passes I went onto my orange pad with menzerna intensive polish.



Next I went onto the white pad with menzerna final polish.



I got rid of all the orange peel but I can still see scratch marks.



Should I get some higher grit paper or work in the #105 longer?
 
go as high as you can with the sandpaper it will finish out nicer.



get some Meguiars unigrit 2000 and 3000.



The scratches remaining might be the deeper scratches cause my the uneveness of the 1000 and 1500 grits you used. M105 should be able to take out even 1500, and 2000 grit no problem.
 
When I first wetsanded my orange peel panels after a repaint, the lowest grit I would go was 1500. Sure it took longer but I was very certain that everything would come out fine and it did. Patience is key with wetsanding, you should never rush the job because there is no "reset" button ;)

i agree 100% take it slow
 
Yup, finish off with 3000 and take your time. And you don't need a "few minutes", more like a few seconds. Remember you're removing a lot of clear with wet sanding compared to removing clear with a polish.
 
The purple wool/foam doesn't cut very well even over 2000 grit. And if you're

seeing scratch marks, it's likely from the initial compounding stage not removing

the 1500. As others have pointed out, go to at least 2000 but use a 100% twisted

wool pad for the first stage of compounding. You can then opt to follow up with

the purple wool.



And as fas grits go, it depends on the severity/quality of the orange peel. And the

number of clear coats applied (3 coats minimum). 1000 is usually safe to start with.
