Wetsanding Newly Painted Surface

A co-worker of mine is painting a kit car he is building.

He has given me a small piece of the car that has been painted and cleared 4x. He would like me to attempt to wetsand and polish the surface.

He used acrylic urethane clear coat, and I plan on letting sanding it with 1500 grit paper.

Would i need to use any differnt rubbing compounds? I have most of the Meg's pro line and all the 3m Compounds...anyone have any suggestions.

Thanks

No you're prolly good to go.

I can't recall offhand which Meguiar's polish removes 1500 grit sanding marks.... DACP maybe? Anyway, if it were me I'd start with DACP and a cutting pad and go from there. Or use whatever 3M polish removes 1500 grit marks.

After the 1500 you could go to 2000 (and even 2500), more work sanding but less work buffing, which could be a little delicate with a rotary unless you have tons of experience with it. Sandind to 2000 or 2500 would be a snap for the PC and a lot safer too.

Thanks Gonzo

Your advice is appreciated

One thing to keep in mind is to make sure the paint is fully cured before sanding. This usually takes at least 30 days. If you have never wet sanded before, use plenty of water and a little soap in the water. I usually take a big sponge and allow the water to run over the panel I am sanding. Also use a block where possible so that you don't create unequal pressure points that can sand deeper into the clear coat. Very light pressure, as all you want to do is lightly dull the surface. It's not that difficult but patience is the key. Don't be in a hurry. Taking off less surface is better than taking off to much. The results, if done right, can be outstanding.:)

Hold on... acrylic urethane? Isn't it one or the other?

Acrylic is the resins used for the paint and the urethane is a type of paint that has a catalyst to make it set up much harder. There is also Acrylic Lacquer and Acrylic Enamel paints.:)

Jumping in here....

What kind of soap do you use? Any car wash soap?

Completed the Sanding.

I used the meguiars backing pad to sand.

Used the soap and water to sand. I only sanded in 1 direction and stopped and wiped the surface periodically to check for my progress.

The paint is from a Lamborgini, I was told that the catalyst in the paint would allow for me to sand within 12 hours of the application..I waited well over a week.

I'll take pic's when my friends project is done...

The outcome of the sanding came out great...all imperfections are gone.

Thanks,
