Updated Volvo Shot on Page 2

______________________________________________________

Well, I'm back at school now so all details will be on weekends. I have a bunch lined up for the next couple of months, but it won't be anything (volume wise) like the summer.

Anyways, I had a real tough one on my hands for the first detail.

1998 Volvo V70 Wagon

This belonged to my girlfriend's parents. They are the second owners and the first owners really beat the hell out of it. The front end is nothing short of SHOT! In reality, it needs a repaint, but I figured I'd try my best to fix it up for them.

I started off with the interior. I did my Oxy Mix on the carpets, Water:Woolite on everything else. 303 on rubber/plastic/vinyl and Lexol on the leather. Gliptone Glass Cleaner on the windows, wood trim, chrome door handles, and clear plastic.

Onto the exterior. This was the real beast, like I mentioned above. I started with a Mother's Gold Wash, Wolfgang Clay, Rain-X, then dryed with a WW. For the rims, tires, and wells I did TOL's Wheel Wash x 2 with the necessary brushes. They cleaned up almost everything, but there were some badly caked areas that had a little residue left over.

Next, I began wetsanding (2000 grit) some of the terribly touched up rock chips, and some deeper scratches. The whole car was very swirled, scratched, scuffed, and chipped. I played around with abrasives to remove the sanding marks, but in the end, DACP and Menzerna IP with a cutting pad @ 1500 rpm did the trick.

I followed up by doing IP with a cutting pad over the whole car. Have to say this stuff gave a noticeably deeper shine than DACP and cut probably, if not, better. I finished up with FP with a polishing pad @ 1500rpm and the shine blew me away. The black was soo deep it scared me. I ended up topping off with EX-P over the FP. I must say that EX-P has never gone on as thin as it did over FP.

I finished up the rest of the exterior with AA on tires and in wells and Gliptone Glass Cleaner on the windows.

Cliff Notes

-Mother's Gold Wash

-Wolfgang Clay

-Spot Wetsanding with 2000 grit papers

-IP with cutting pad @ 1500rpm

-FP with polishing pad @ 1500rpm

-EX-P by hand

-Rain-X to repel, Gliptone Glass Cleaner to clean windows

-AA on tires and in wells

-TOL's Wheel Wash to clean up rims

I just S+W'd today, then topped with Natty's. Tires are still going strong with BnB from last weekend.

Last cherry 2 door - My girlfriend's '99 Snaab 9-3

Current Combo

-EX-P x 1

-CMW x 1

-Natty's x 1

Yesterday, she washed with NXT (as you can see :lol ), then topped with Natty's. She did a complete interior job (sorry no pics) with shampooing, doing the leather, dash, doors, windows, etc. Then on the exterior, 303 on all plastic, 4* leather conditioner topped with 303 on tires (yes I know interesting, she wanted to try it). Looks pretty good to me :)

Fun with washing

Wow that Volvo looked pretty nasty and it looked like you had your work cut out for you.But no surprise at the out come :bow and everytime I see your car it looks great!!! :up :xyxthumbs

Now if I could only get my wife to wash her car.:D

This week man, this week EX and Natty's shall be purchased...at last :D

I'll pick it up from Autogeek tomorrow or the day after, and start layering it (I'm going to do 3x EX and 3x Natty's like you did).

The cars look great (as usual), pretty funny pic of your gf too :lol

A girl doing a 2-bucket wash, that's priceless!

Hopefully I can learn to take some halfway decent pics. I need a tripod :(

nice transformation on the volvo. :xyxthumbs and that looks like a '69-'79 Mach1/Mustang fastback in the garage......

that's an interesting 'fun with washing' picture, like how the water drops are captured. although white clothes to wash in? :o :p both your car and your gf's car looks awesome, very rich and wet looking. :xyxthumbs

04BlackAV: Thanks! It took a little time but she was pretty open-minded about learning my traits.

MattZ28: I try to teach my girl all I know about detailing. Even though she was goofing around in that pic, it created no surface marring (I thought it would) :D . I don't use a tri-pod, but I'm in the market for one. Good Luck with the PB's stuff.

hirosh: 1970 Mach1 Fastback with a 351 cleveland...It's her bros and its absolutely MINT. I'll probably do that one soon. He also has a 1970 with a 302 that he is restoring a bit....White clothes, I think it was a coincidence :-) . Thanks for the compliments.

GS-R Jay: Oh yes they are. Volvo and Saab for all of them, but Liz's bro is all FORD (F150 pickup and 2 classic stangs).

oh damn that's sweet. i'd love to see pictures of that '70 mach1. and your gf's bro has good taste! :D

Excellent work like always Sean! The transformation on the Volvo is amazing! Your own car looks better every time I see it. Your girlfriend looks cute too! ;)

I certainly understand the night shot as well. I worked until nearly 10PM tonight! I detailed my brother's in-law's Sebring and Mountaineer. The Sebring was just horrible. My brother's father in law is a heavy smoker and when I sprayed the woolite/water mix on the leather, you could see rivers of brown run down.

I started around noon, took a couple of 15 minute breaks when my own parents came over and 30 for dinner. Otherwise, I worked pretty much non stop.

great work on the volvo Love the stang I wanna see pics after you do it and I wish my girl would get in to detailing her car. she driving my 97 accord I spent about 5 to 6 hours on it beore I gave it to her. Just to find out she let her brother wash it a few times He used dawn soap and god know what else.Between him and the carwash she akes it to. It look like I never owned that car.

Thanks for everyone's kind words ;)

Scott: It takes a little extra to to the night routine but with the results I achieved, it makes it all worth it :D

Sean - what a transformation on the Volvo. Excellent work!

I will be getting a rotary and still shopping around - which one do you have and do you recommend it or do you think there is another one that you'd like to have?

tdekany: Thanks. I use the Makita 9227 and love it. It takes some time to get used to and to get good at. I recommend watching the Meguiar's vids on www.bettercarcare.com . They helped me a ton.

AJ: Thanks :)

I have been watching those videos on and off, but what confuses me that the meg video the buffer is flat on the paint, but on properautocare.com they tell this:
The trick to using a circular polisher is to always tilt the machine slightly so you are working on the pad's outer edge.

I will go and talk with a detailing shop where I know the owner and get some experience too, but why the difference?
