Waxing with the Porter Cable

I have been waxing with the PC as follows. Apply wax with sponge applicater, wipe off with MF towel before hazing, then buffing with PC at # 5 speed, using a black foam pad.

Should I be applying the wax with the PC?

Some like wax application with the PC, while others dont.



Personally I wax using the PC. I find it can go quicker, as well as put on a nice THIN layer of wax.



Use speed 4, and dont put nearly as much pressure on the car as you would if you were polishing/compounding.
 
I also apply my wax with the PC, usually between speeds 3 and 4. It makes the job much quicker, provides even coverage and a thin layer. Just switch pads to remove the wax, I remove at speed 6, and you'll be done in no time!
 
If I read the post correctly, you're applying the wax, removing it and then polishing with a PC? May I ask why?

A dry black pad can't do anything but hurt your finish.
 
I just recently started waxing with the PC and a finishing pad with Meg's #26 liquid. I had been missing out waxing by hand. It's so easy to wax this way, and you get better coverage, thinner layers, and in less time. I still remove by hand, though... mostly because I find 26 buffs off SO easy.

my question to some of you is, if you are removing the wax via the PC, how many bonnets ( or whatever you use ) do you use ??

when i remove by hand, i use a fresh area on the MF every panel, or every other panel.

I've heard of people removing/buffing wax with foam before and I've tried it- not my cup of tea, I'll stick to buffing it with MF. When I did it, I worked by hand using a foam "wax removal pad" that I got from Griot's. It was about the same as a regular finishing pad. Too risky IMO, I'd worry about marring or at least streaking, especially once the foam gets loaded with wax residue.



I apply with the PC/Cyclo (speed ~4 with the PC) and remove with MF bonnets on the same machines. I remove all the wax (#16, 476S, you name it) with *usually* just one MF bonnet, and that's on the A8 or, more recently, the Blazer. If you put the wax on nice and thin, one bonnet (and one MF for by-hand follow up) will be sufficient. If you put the wax on thicker, then yeah, you're gonna need more bonnets/towels to get it all off (which is a good example of how excess LSP is a complete waste of product, time, and effort).



The last time I buffed #16 off the A8 (this last weekend) the ~6" Meg's MF bonnet still looked perfectly clean after I was finished, couldn't see any wax on it. But then I'm a bit of a fanatic about thin LSP applications.
 
How would you apply the wax by pc? I mean do you follow the same process as applying a polish (left to right then up and down)? Do you move slowly like you would when polishing? Thanks.

yes, it is the same concept,

but you do not really have to apply any pressure,



3-4 speed setting ona pc with a polishing pad or finishing pad. :spot
 
Its not nearly as involved as polishing. Polishing requires products to break downm and surface leveling. Applying wax or sealant just requires just covering the area with product, once.

I also prefer removal by hand, I dont really see a need to "buff" with the pc and a dry pad.

Exactly - I use UPP and it comes off by hand so easy. I think i'll keep doing it this way. I'm going ot have to try this with Natty's Blue.
 
Do you guys think it's possible to use the PC to apply on Carnauba Jett/OCW mix? The mix is a lot easier than applying CJ by hand, but I still feel like it is a bit tough to apply/remove.
 
For me it's apply liquids with PC and apply pastes by hand. When working with something like Natty's I could see applying it by PC as the way to go (and I'll try it that way next time), but with Souveran or Max Wax or any other WOWO paste I think I'll stick to hand application with a foam applicator. I kinda like applying paste by hand because it feels "old school." :D

I guess I will try it using the pc to apply it (who doesn't like saving time) but will wipe off by hand. Using a dry pad for buffing is not for me at this time.

Yeah, I gotta admit I do the XJS by hand ;) But FWIW I no longer WOWO my Souveran, I let it set up like my other pastes (after Mike Phillips challenged me to try it that way, sure enough, he was right...).
